The multinational based in Singapore Olam, officially confirmed on Tuesday afternoon (02/03), that it will invest U$ 130 million (almost R$ 740 million) to build a soluble coffee factory in Linhares (ES). The works have already started with a forecast of 26 months for its conclusion and the beginning of its operations, where in total, around a thousand jobs will be generated. The announcement took place last Tuesday at a virtual meeting that brought together the mayor of Linhares, Guerino Zanon, the governor Renato Casagrande, the Senior Vice President of Olam, Sathyamurthy Mayilswamy, the president of the coffee division of Olam in Brazil, Jerônimo Pereira and the director of the company in Espírito Santo, Fabrício Tristão, in addition to the State Secretary for Development, Thyago Hoffmann.

The choice of Linhares to host the company is anchored by the fact that Espírito Santo is considered the largest producer of conilon coffee in the country, the main raw material for the production of soluble coffee. Of the 15 million bags produced in Brazil, Espírito Santo is responsible for 66% of all national production, that is, 10 million bags. Of this total, the North and Northwest regions of the State produce 7,5 million bags.

Another factor that was decisive in the installation of Olam is the availability of water in the municipality (the Rio Doce aquifer), a fundamental point for the production process of soluble coffee.

Job creation the Holy Spirit

The construction of the factory will create about a thousand jobs in the state of Espírito Santo. In the construction stage, with a forecast of two years of work, up to 700 workers will be employed. In the industry operation that should start in 2023, 250 jobs will be generated.

In the construction phase, they will be required, as a mason, painter, welder, mechanic, technician, helper, engineer, in addition to the administrative and operational areas.

Linhares Economic Development Secretary, Luiz Fernando Lorenzoni, highlighted that the Municipality adopts an appropriate strategy to attract investments and organized management that expands, strengthens, modernizes and diversifies the Municipality's economy.

“The commitment to generate jobs, income and new opportunities is being fulfilled. Olan is a large group, with global operations and will certainly collaborate a lot with the strengthening of the local economic dynamics, in addition to integrating even more the coffee chain. We are very happy with this investment”, he said.

Largest soluble coffee export hub in the world

“We received Café Olam representatives at Findes in February. They came to talk about the start of works, but there were restrictions on the official announcement, which we can only comment on now. Today, Espírito Santo accounts for 7% of Brazil's soluble coffee exports. In two years it will represent 27% and in 5 years it will be more than 45%. With this, Espírito Santo will become in 5 years the largest soluble coffee export center in the world. This is very important for industry in Espírito Santo and the country and opens up many business and job opportunities in the region, where we also have plans to expand ports,” said Cris Samorini, President of the Federation of Industries of Espírito Santo (Findes).
