In 2024, the partial exercise will take place, without involvement of the population
Eletronuclear clarifies that the information that the General Integrated Exercise for Emergency Response and Nuclear Physical Security will be carried out in 2024 is unfounded, in Angra dos Reis, on the Costa Verde of Rio de Janeiro.
The simulation, supervised by the Institutional Security Office of the Presidency of the Republic (GSI/PR) and coordinated by the State Secretariat of Civil Defense of the State of Rio de Janeiro, normally takes place every two years, in odd-numbered years – with its last edition in 2023.
In other years, there is the Partial Integrated Exercise for Emergency Response and Nuclear Physical Security, when a tabletop exercise is carried out, that is, without simulated practical activities in the vicinity of the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Nuclear Power Station (CNAAA).
Both have the objective of evaluating the effectiveness of the response structure, validating plans, identifying aspects to improve and consolidating the procedures provided for in the External Emergency Plan of the State of Rio de Janeiro (PEE/RJ) for the CNAAA, aimed at protecting the population, the environment, nuclear plants and their workers.
Partial Exercise
The next Integrated Partial Emergency Response and Nuclear Physical Security Exercise will take place from October 30th to November 01st, 2024, and involves professionals from approximately 60 institutions, at the federal, state and municipal levels, who will carry out a series of activities, without displacement or involvement of the region's population.
The actions to be verified in this exercise are still being defined by the Planning Committee for Response to Nuclear Emergency Situations in the Municipality of Angra dos Reis (Copren/AR).
General Exercise
The 29th edition of the General Integrated Exercise for Emergency Response and Nuclear Physical Security took place from August 15th to 18th last year and brought together hundreds of professionals, at three levels of government: municipal, state and federal.
More than 1.300 military personnel from the Brazilian Navy, the Brazilian Army and the Brazilian Air Force participated. This is a complex operation, which involves several civil and military entities and the carrying out of practical activities such as the activation of the warning and alarm system using sirens, the aeromedical removal of a radio accident victim to the Hospital Naval Marcílio Dias, in Rio de Janeiro, the distribution of potassium iodide kits, land and sea evacuation of residents, collection of soil, air, water and vegetation samples, among others.
