Portable Turbine at a Cellular Price – PowerSpout image

The smart little turbine that turns current from rivers and streams into clean energy uses fiberglass nylon and stainless steel as construction materials!

PowerSpout has created different models of homemade mini turbines, so that each customer can carry out their own installation depending on the flow of the river they have. And the invention drew international attention, as on their blog they show installations in countries as diverse as Kenya, Mexico, Romania, Greece or Thailand.

Installed individually or together, these small turbines transform the flow of water into direct current, reaching a maximum power of 2.000 W. A very homemade way to reduce the electricity bill, although it is also possible to request that the installation be done by the company itself.

Anyone who has a constant stream of water available can reduce their electricity bill through this mini turbine!

“If you have a place that can generate more energy than a turbine, simply install as many as you need up to the water flow resource limit“, recommends the company. Obviously, the generation capacity of turbines largely depends on the water supply in which it is installed, mainly due to the height at which the water falls and the quantity of water that flows at any given time.

They currently have three different turbine models. For example, the Pelton model (PLT) supports a flow of less than 8 liters per second. “A PLT turbine is a low-flow turbine, so it tends to be used at higher heights, generally more than 20 meters,” they say in your site.

Anyone who has a constant stream of water available can reduce their electricity bill through this more sustainable mechanism. Not everyone has this possibility, but some villages near rivers could use it, complementing renewable energy generation with solar panels and wind turbines.

In addition, it can work alone, charging electricity in a battery, or connected to the grid. A standard turbine has a capacity of up to 1.200 W, while a high power turbine reaches 1.600 W. In some special cases, 2.000 W can be reached.

The thrusters ensure that one of their devices placed in a permanent current strong enough to generate 1 kW/h would serve to supply clean electricity to a house for a year. In any case, each homeowner can consider placing multiple turbines on the available water stream if they need more power.

How much does your own power plant cost? The mini turbine is priced like a cell phone!

Each of the models has its own installation and operation. The PowerSpout PLT must be placed at the end of several long pipes in order for the water drop to have sufficient force. In the turbine are several jets that convert the pressure into a high-velocity thrust, which impacts a Pelton rotor to extract most of the energy. This is connected directly to a permanent magnet alternator and thus electricity is produced.

Another of the models, the PowerSpout LH, is a propeller-type turbine that remains constantly submerged. Unlike the other models, it does not work by the flow of water produced by the tubes, but is placed at the top end of a tube that connects two bodies of water, which could be described as a drain in a pond.

The company wanted to give each model a robust construction, using glass fiber nylon or stainless steel, although it does indicate that periodic maintenance is required. Respect for the environment is also present in manufacturing. In an attempt to create a circular economy, 68% of the materials that make up this turbine are recycled and 70% can be recycled when the useful life of the product ends.

For those interested in purchasing one of its solutions, which range from $3.000 to over $4.000, the company has created a series of virtual calculators to evaluate installing one of these turbines and how much savings on the electricity bill it can bring to a home. The calculators show everything from electricity generation according to flow, to the impact of the project, such as the length and diameter the pipe will have, system voltage, cable size and material.
