The project includes the installation of 1.600 photovoltaic solar panels on the roof of the building attached to the Ministry of Defense
The project to implement a photovoltaic solar plant at the Esplanada dos Ministérios under the Ministry of Defense's spending efficiency program has been in operation for over 90 days, and has been generating renewable and clean energy, in addition to providing savings in financial resources. Morro da Babilônia, in the South Zone of Rio, will receive the first solar power plant in a favela in Brazil

Occupying an area of approximately 3.200 m², the pilot project includes the installation of 1.600 photovoltaic panels on the roof of the building attached to the Ministry of Defense.
The plant has an installed capacity of 528 kWp and generates, on average, 72.000 KWh/month, which represents enough energy to supply around 350 low-income households.
For the Manager of the Department of Engineering and General Services (DESEG), Thiago D'Arolla Pedrosa Galvão, “One of the most important commitments between government, business and society is to guarantee quality of life on the planet in the coming decades. Aware of this responsibility, we are taking an important step on this path”.
Costs
With the new solar photovoltaic plant, it is possible to supply more than 50% of the energy consumed by the Annex of the Ministry of Defense, saving 69.513 kg of carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere.
The Ministry of Defense will be able to reduce more than 40% of the monthly energy bill. When energy consumption is less than the capacity generated by the solar plant, the surplus will be made available to Companhia Energética de Brasília (CEB), generating credit for the injected energy and a reduction in the value of the electricity bill.
R$ 2,4 million was invested in the project to implement a photovoltaic solar plant at Esplanada dos Ministérios, and the return is estimated in around six years. The useful life of the system is 25 years.
