Apple invests in new renewable energy solutions with more than 110 suppliers to reduce CO2 levels in the atmosphere

Apple said on Wednesday that it will build and further invest in building a battery-based renewable energy storage facility in central California, close to a solar facility that already powers all of its facilities in the state to reduce CO31 levels.

According to Apple, the project that aims to attract new investments in renewable energy will store 240 megawatt hours of energy, or enough to supply more than 7.000 homes for a day. It is located near the California Flats solar facility in southeastern Monterey County, about 160 miles southeast of Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California.

The site sends 130 megawatts of electricity directly to Apple's California facilities during the day, but does not supply power during the dark period. Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president for environment, policy and social initiatives, said in an interview that the company intends to develop what it believes will be one of the largest battery-based storage systems in the United States.

Supplier commitments and global renewable energy projects

Apple is constantly investing in new tools for its suppliers to help realize its renewable energy goals and bring new clean energy to communities around the world. In Europe, DSM Engineering Materials' wind power purchase agreement is bringing new clean energy to the grid in the Netherlands, and STMicroelectronics' solar garage in Morocco is supporting regional energy production.

Companies like Solvay are now expanding their use of renewable energy into their broader operations after joining Apple's Supplier Clean Energy Program five years ago. In the US, Alpha and Omega Semiconductor, Marian, The Chemours Company and Trinseo have recently committed to the program. And in China, 15 suppliers have joined Apple's program since July 2020.

Sharing the experience gained through Apple's own transition to 100 percent renewable energy with its suppliers, the company provides suppliers with country-specific resources and training materials to guide them in their transition to renewable energy.

Apple also educates suppliers through advanced, personalized training from leading experts. And the company supports the creation and growth of renewable energy industry associations that its suppliers can join to learn about local opportunities.
