The purchase of the hydroelectric plants, whose value was not disclosed, will allow CSN to focus on investments in the renewable energy sector

As disclosed by Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional – which in January expanded internal and external sales –, or just CSN, on Friday, April 8, its two subsidiary companies CSN Cimentos and CSN Energia celebrated the signing of an agreement with Brookfield Americas Infrastructure (Brazil Power) regarding the acquisition of 100% of Santa Ana Energética holder of the concession for the exploitation of the Santa Ana Small Hydroelectric Power Plant (SHP Santa Ana), the Small Hydroelectric Power Plant SacreII (PCH Sacre), Topázio Energética and, indirectly, Brasil Central Energia (BCE).

According to what was declared in a note by the companies and published by Giovana Leal in an article for the online news channel Money Times, taking into account the estimate of increasing consumption of electricity by CSN Cimentos for the coming years due to new purchases and the medium and long-term development of projects, the acquisition of the SHP hydroelectric plants has the main objective of supporting and strengthening CSN's business expansion plans, through investments in the renewable energy sector – very promising for Brazil – and self-production of energy to generate greater competitiveness for its businesses.

Among other suspensive determinations, the closing of the operation still depends on approval by the competition and regulatory authorities, CSN finally informed. The value of the purchase of the hydroelectric plants was not disclosed.

Meet the giant CSN

Founded in April 1941, CSN was the first integrated flat steel producer in Brazil, a milestone in the country's industrialization process. Privatized in 1993, the Company has been updating itself in the market and diversifying its activities. Thus, it is one of the most efficient integrated steel complexes in the world, and operates prominently in five sectors: steel, mining, logistics, cement and energy.

In addition, CSN has a vision of sustainability that increases the efficiency of industrial processes and establishes gains with the circular economy, bringing benefits to all those involved in this value generation chain. The company's management is focused on the development of its teams and harmonious coexistence with the communities in the cities where it operates, in Brazil – where it is present in 18 states – and abroad.

Solar energy, which has already provided R$ 75 billion to Brazil, can replace hydroelectric power in the national energy matrix, according to Absolar

On Wednesday, March 30, the Brazilian Association of Solar Photovoltaic Energy (Absolar), which represents the solar energy sector in the country, held the election of the Board of Directors for the years 2022 to 2026. Ronaldo Koloszuk will be the president of the Association for another four years.

Ronaldo told the Exame news vehicle that his re-election is evidence of the trust that his associates place in his team. During his time at the head of Absolar's board, Koloszuk has watched the solar industry grow dramatically. In March alone, the source reached 14 gigawatts of operational power, thus surpassing the Itaipu plant, which is the largest hydroelectric plant in Brazil. Since 2012, when solar energy gained more national prominence, this renewable source has brought almost 75 billion reais in investments, in addition to generating 420 jobs.

For the Absolar executive, solar energy is attractive in economic and technological terms. “With one day of installation, the customer achieves a reduction of up to 90% in the electricity bill. In three years, the investment pays for itself”, explains Koloszuk. Interested? Finish reading this article clicking this link. Here at CPG you can check news from CSN and several other companies.
