The Brazilian Northeast will gain the largest solar and wind farm in South America; the development will be built by the energy company Enel and will generate many jobs in the state of Piauí.

The Brazilian Northeast will be a reference in renewable energy, the Italian company Enel, which operates in the generation and distribution of electricity and in the distribution of natural gas, will build the largest wind and solar park in South America, in the state of Piauí, and generate thousands of jobs in the region. The plants will be built in the municipalities of Lagoa do Barro and São Gonçalo do Gurguéia (PI), in the Northeast. Solar and wind energy parks will prevent the emission of more than two million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere annually.

The first stage of the venture began operating in 2020, when Usina São Gonçalo was already generating around 475 MW. Now, the park's first expansion is being finalized, leaving Brazil ahead in Latin America.

The objective is to reach 608 MW, which will make the park generate more than 1.500 GWh per year, avoiding the annual emission of more than 860 thousand tons of CO2. In addition to wind energy, the park uses bifacial solar modules, which capture solar energy from both sides of the panel.

The wind farm was named Lagoa dos Ventos and will have 230 wind turbines that, when in full operation, can generate more than 3,3 TWh per year!

“We can say that, in the wind ranking, Piauí occupies the fifth place among the largest producers of this type of energy in Brazil, behind only Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará and Rio Grande do Sul; as for solar energy, we are the third, but we are the state that builds the most and that has the most promising future in the potential for generating this energy”, celebrates Wilson Brandão, Secretary of State for Mining, Petroleum and Renewable Energies.

In addition to avoiding carbon dioxide emissions, however, we cannot forget that the plants will also generate thousands of jobs in the region. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the renewable energy sector could generate 29 million jobs by 2030.

Millionaire investment in the Northeast: Total will generate 900 jobs to build wind farms in RN

The renewable energy producer, whose shareholder is oil company Total, announced yesterday (26/11) that it secured millionaire financing for the works of two wind farms in the Northeast, through the issuance of a long-term debt with a maturity of 22 years

The BRL 423 million (US$76 million) long-term financing provided by Banco do Nordeste (BNB) was to finance the 160 MW Total Eren wind portfolio currently under construction in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. R$ 241 million for the Terra Santa wind farm and R$ 182 million for Maral.
