Mining earns 9% more in the second quarter with resumption of demand from China. O Brazilian Institute of Mining attributes high to good performance in the international market and continuity of work at mining companies during the pandemic of the new coronavirus.
Brazilian mining earned BRL 39 billion in the second quarter of the year, according to a balance sheet released on July 21 by the Brazilian Institute of Mining (ibram). Mining companies' revenue grew 9% compared to the first three months of 2020, which registered R$ 36 billion. The amounts do not include oil and gas exploration.
The mining sector earned BRL 14,7 billion in Minas Gerais from April to June, which represents 37,66% of the total in the country. But the state is second on the list, behind Pará. Mining revenues in the state reached 16,7 billion in the period – 42,7% of the total. The other representative states of the sector – Bahia, Goiás, São Paulo and Mato Grosso – together registered R$ 4,4 billion, which represents 11,8% of the national value.

Despite the crisis, the mining sector maintains investment forecasts for the coming years. Ibram calculates that companies should invest BRL 32,5 billion in new projects by 2024.
Employment is another factor that remains unchanged in the mining sector. According to the institute, mining companies maintained direct job vacancies in the range of 175 from January to May.
