Brazil prepares for the offshore wind revolution: TotalEnergies and Fiabe Participações announce massive projects!

TotalEnergies is at the forefront of the expansion of offshore wind in Brazil, with the submission of four new licensing applications for offshore wind farms in different Brazilian states. These projects, located in Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul and Piauí, add up to an impressive installed capacity of 12,1 GW. Furthermore, Fiabe Participações also is entering this market with an order for 2,8 GW for a project in Espírito Santo.

Investment and growth

These licensing requests represent a major boost for the renewable energy sector in Brazil. With the addition of these new projects, the total number of licensing applications in the country reached 96, adding up to an impressive capacity of 234,2 GW. This marks a significant increase compared to Ibama's last update, which recorded 219,2 GW in September 2023.

The interest of TotalEnergies and Fiabe Participações in expanding their operations in Brazil reflects the promising potential of the offshore wind energy market in the country. TotalEnergies already had 9 GW in three offshore wind projects under licensing, and in September signed an agreement with Petrobras and Casa dos Ventos to study renewable projects, including offshore wind.

International context

While Brazil sees promising growth in the sector, the global offshore wind scenario faces challenges. Companies including Equinor and bp canceled a 1,2 GW project off the coast of New York due to unfavorable trading conditions driven by inflation, interest rates and supply chain disruptions.

In Brazil, the sector awaits the approval of the legal framework for offshore wind farms, which was approved in the Chamber (PL 11247/2018) at the end of November and is now awaiting a decision in the Senate. This legal framework is crucial for the future development of the offshore wind energy sector in the country, and also addresses issues such as the price of natural gas and the recontracting of coal plants by 2050.

The project by TotalEnergies and Fiabe Participações

TotalEnergies, as one of the world's leading energy companies, has a global presence and a commitment to the energy transition. Your experience in large-scale offshore wind contributes to credibility from the project.

On the other hand, Fiabe Participações brings with it in-depth knowledge of the Brazilian energy market and an understanding of the country's specific needs and opportunities. Your local expertise can be crucial in ensuring projects are successful and aligned with local regulations and requirements.
