Solar energy in Brazil has already exceeded the installed capacity of oil-fired thermoelectric plants and is approaching that of biomass plants

Punctually sixty days after hitting 15 gigawatts (GW), Brazil has just transcended a new historical signal, that of 16 GW of installed power the energy photovoltaic solar panels, complementing large-scale plants and self-generating sets of electricity on roofs, facades and small plots of land.

According to ABSOLAR, solar energy has already sent to Brazil more than R$ 86,2 billion in new investments, around R$ 22,8 billion in collection for public coffers and originated more than 479,8 thousand jobs gathered since the year of 2012. In addition, solar energy also avoided the emission of 23,6 million tons of CO2 in power generation.

In the opinion of the CEO of ABSOLAR, Rodrigo Sauaia, the rise of solar energy in the country, through large plants and own generation in homes, micro businesses, rural properties and public buildings, is essential for the social, economic and environmental development of the country. Brazil.

“The source helps to diversify the country's electricity supply, reducing the pressure on water resources and the risk of further increases in the population's electricity bill”, he reports.

According to the CEO, large-scale solar power plants produce electricity at values up to ten times lower than emergency fossil thermoelectric plants and electricity imported from other countries. Both are currently the main drivers of energy tariff increases on consumers.

Solar energy sector expects exponential growth in the year 2022

the niche of solar energy expects an accelerated development this year in the solar systems operating in Brazil, mainly in the own solar energy generation systems.

The development of solar energy in 2022 was even more anticipated after Law No. 14.300/2022, which created the legal framework for self-generation of energy, came into force.

"It is the best time for individuals to invest in solar energy, precisely for the transition period provided for by law, which guarantees the maintenance of current rules until 2045 for consumers who install a solar system on their roof until January 2023", declares the president of the Board of Directors of ABSOLAR, Ronaldo Koloszuk.

Brazil has approximately 5,1 GW of installed power in its large solar power plants, which is equivalent to 2,6% of the country's electricity matrix. Since 2012, the largest solar plants have provided Brazil with more than R$27,0 billion in new investments and more than 152 jobs, in addition to providing public coffers with a receipt of R$8,4 billion.

In the own energy source generation block, there are more than 10,9 GW of installed power from the solar source. This corresponds to more than R$ 59,2 billion in investments, R$ 14,4 billion in receipts and more than 327,8 thousand jobs generated since 2012, dispersed throughout the five regions of Brazil. Solar technology is currently used in 98% of all own energy generation connections in the country, commanding the segment.

Solar source ranks fifth in Brazil's electricity matrix

When totaling all installed capacity in large plants and own generation, the solar source occupies the fifth place in the electric matrix of the Brazil.

The solar source has already exceeded the installed power of thermoelectric plants fueled by oil and other fossil fuels in the Brazilian electricity matrix and is rapidly approaching the total installed power of plants that use biomass as their main source.

According to Koloszuk, in addition to being accessible and having great competition, the solar source can be installed quickly and helps to reduce energy bill values, since it can lower up to 90% of electricity costs.
