Chevrolet Silverado electric pickup surprises in tests carried out and delivers 100 km of autonomy more than promised. Chevrolet model debuts on the market with a range of 740 km on a single charge!

Estimates of electric vehicle range do not always correspond to reality. The real world has hills, high-speed highways, load variations and different climates, factors that can significantly impact the autonomy of an electric car. However, while some models do not meet expectations in real use conditions, others, such as the Chevrolet Silverado electric pickup, surpass the autonomy figures published by the manufacturers.

Electric Chevrolet Silverado delivers more autonomy than expected

In the case of the Chevrolet Silverado EV RST 2024 electric pickup truck, a test carried out by JerryRigEverything Youtuber suggests that the model meets its impressive range estimate of 640 official km and goes beyond.

Zack Nelson, who runs the channel mentioned above, took a Silverado EV RST on a road trip from Las Vegas to Phoenix and managed to travel 460,2 miles, the equivalent of 740 km, before running out of the Chevrolet Silverado electric pickup truck's battery.

The Detroit brand has just announced new details about the next version of the model, including range estimated by General Motors of 440 miles (708 km). That's significantly more than longer-range versions of rivals like the Ford F-150 Lightning (320 miles), Rivian R1T (410 miles), and Tesla Cybertruck (340 miles, or reportedly more than 470 with a range-extending battery that has not yet seen the light of day).

In the video, Nelson states that the route was mainly made up of highways, with some dirt roads and urban sections as well. The trip also included a 300-meter elevation drop, which may have helped increase the pickup's range a little. However, Nelson highlights that this only represents a drop of 0,6 m per mile (1,6 km) traveled

How efficient was the new Chevrolet pickup?

The important thing is that, overall, the route feels representative of how someone might actually use their Chevrolet Silverado electric pickup truck. And the model did very well, reaching an efficiency of 3,2 km/kWh, for those who are more curious.

While a 708-mile range is definitely unnecessary for most situations, this kind of gargantuan range could be essential in convincing skeptical pickup truck buyers to consider electrification in the future. 

One of the reasons is towing, since, in general, electric trucks lose a lot of range when towing loads. With more than 640 miles available, the Chevrolet Silverado electric pickup may be the first that meets the expectations of those who tow regularly, even with a trailer attached.

How much will the new Chevrolet Silverado electric pickup truck cost?

All this range requires a ridiculously large battery, which pushes the price of the Chevrolet Silverado electric pickup into luxury territory. The brand announced last Wednesday that the top-of-the-line pickup truck will cost $96.495 including shipping. Deliveries are scheduled to begin soon, later this year. It is worth mentioning that the brand already sells a more basic Silverado EV, but only for fleets.

And sometimes, even having an unbeatable range of 460 miles at your disposal isn't enough to make it to the charger. The Silverado EV that the YouTuber was driving ran out of charge in a parking lot about 100 meters from a charging station. 

However, it is important to highlight that several initiatives are being developed to improve vehicle autonomy and Nio's semi-solid state batteries are already a reality. After successfully undergoing several fine-tuning tests, it has now entered the mass production phase. These components can offer a range of up to 1.000 km per charge.
