Ecofining technology will transform waste into renewable diesel
Repsol, in partnership with Honeywell, is taking a revolutionary approach to the production of renewable fuels. Using Honeywell's Ecofining technology, Repsol plans to transform approximately 240 thousand metric tons of waste and raw materials per year into renewable diesel and other products, significantly contributing to the reduction of carbon footprint from the company.
The innovative Ecofining Process
The Honeywell UOP Ecofining process will be implemented at the Repsol factory in Puertollano, Spain. This technology not only allows the economical conversion of waste into renewable fuels, but also ensures a high production yield. Materials such as used cooking oil and animal fat will be the main sources for this conversion.
Berta Cabello, Director of Renewable Fuels at Repsol, emphasizes the importance of this initiative: “Renewable fuels are a fundamental pillar in our commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, and Honeywell provides us with Ecofining technology to achieve this goal.” This factory will be Repsol's second dedicated exclusively to the production of 100% renewable fuels, strengthening the company's leadership in this market in the Iberian Peninsula.

Environmental impact and commitment to sustainability
Barry Glickman, vice president of Honeywell Sustainable Technology Solutions, highlights the positive impact of this technology: “Ecofining technology will allow Repsol to convert waste into renewable fuels and reduce your carbon footprint”. The renewable diesel and SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) produced can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional diesel or aviation fuel.
Honeywell, in collaboration with Eni SpA, developed UOP Ecofining to convert a variety of waste feedstocks into renewable diesel and SAF. In addition to Ecofining, Honeywell offers other technologies for producing renewable fuels, including Ethanol to Jet and the recently announced Honeywell UOP eFining, which uses green hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
Honeywell: commitment to carbon neutrality
Honeywell recently reinforced its commitment to sustainability, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality in its operations and facilities by 2035. This commitment builds on the company's track record in reducing greenhouse gas intensity and its history of innovations aimed at helping customers to achieve their environmental and social objectives. Around 60% of Honeywell's research and development investment in 2022 was directed to projects focused on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) for customers.
This partnership between Repsol and Honeywell symbolizes a significant advance in the production of renewable fuels, marking an important step towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future.
