National Electric Energy Agency, Aneel, determines an increase of more than R$ 25 million to cover water scarcity expenses

On Tuesday, March 29, the board of the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) approved a change in the ceiling amount of the loan to the electricity sector to pay costs of the severe water crisis. In the current amount, 25,3 million reais will be added, thus jumping from 5,339 billion reais to 5,365 billion reais. The amounts resulting from the adjustment will be paid by consumers over the next few years, taking interest into account.

According to the text by Marlla Sabino for the online news vehicle Broadcast, the approval of the credit operation took place on March, by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel). Considering that the tariff flags were not able to collect enough, the new amount determined by Aneel will also cover, in addition to the gap in the Flags account, the expenses incurred with the import of energy in the period of July and August, the bonus for those consumers who saved energy and amounts due to distribution companies.

Objectives of the change

The adjustment approved by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) – which had already authorized loans for the electric sector – was made to cover the portion corresponding to amounts owed to companies whose electricity distribution services are permitted, also known as “permissionárias”. These companies do not obtain a concession contract, as is the case with distributors. Thus, from the change in the amount as determined by Aneel, they will have a period of up to five days, counting from the announcement of the decision, to announce the amounts they intend to borrow.

Director Efrain da Cruz, rapporteur for the process, stated that the insertion of the amounts corresponding to the deferrals of these companies are guaranteed by the Provisional Measure that regulates the loan. “The amount to be added represents 0,47% of the ceiling value approved for the first tranche of the credit operation, which goes from R$ 5.339.761.530,51 to R$ 5.365.062.152,96”, said the rapporteur.

About Aneel

Brazil relies on the National Electric Energy Agency, or simply Aneel, to determine the growth and quality of the electricity sector, which is so important to the country. Thus, Aneel's main function is to supervise and regulate the production, transmission, commercialization and distribution of electricity in the national territory. Another attribution of Aneel is to grant, authorize or permit electricity installations and services.

In addition, Aneel has the role of implementing policies in the sector, carrying out auctions and concessions, managing contracts, establishing rules for energy services, creating methodologies for calculating tariffs and overseeing energy supply and mediating conflicts.
