Federal Government creates benefit program for citizens who save electricity: there will be discounts on the electricity bill

Those who voluntarily managed to save electricity in the last four months of 2021 will be rewarded by a Federal Government program through a discount on their electricity bill for the first month of this year

Last year, the Federal Government had already announced that whoever was able to save electricity would benefit. Fortunately, the promise was fulfilled in the face of the current hydroelectric crisis in Brazil, which, according to specialists in the field, almost caused a generalized power outage.

From this, the Federal Government created the Incentive Program for the Voluntary Reduction of Electric Energy Consumption, with the objective of promoting the reduction of the amount of light consumed. The project already offers discounts to direct beneficiaries on the electricity bill starting in the first month of 2022.

The beneficiaries of this Federal Government project are, in short, those who managed to save 10% to 20% of their electricity consumption, between September and December of last year, compared to the same period of 2020.

According to what was released by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the reduction will be equivalent to R$ 0,50 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) saved on the electricity bill. Forecasts show that approximately 35,5 million Brazilian citizens will obtain discounts with the measure, so that around R$ 2,4 billion in bonuses will be granted by the Federal Government.

How to proceed to request the benefit on the electricity bill?

Taking into account that most contemplations generated by the Federal Government require the request of the interested person, the above question is a frequent and pertinent question. However, contrary to what is customary, in the case of the electricity bill, this is not required, as the discount is automatically applied to the January 2022 electricity bill.
