Last Saturday (29/08), President Jair Bolsonaro made an announcement in the Goiás municipality of Caldas Novas, where he participated in the inauguration of a photovoltaic power plant, together with the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Gonçalves, and the Governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (DEM). Brazil has encouraged renewable energy – a Photovoltaic Plant will be installed in the Ponto Novo Irrigation District, in Bahia, to reduce farmers' electricity bills

At the event, the president once again placed himself against the charging of taxes on solar energy generation, stating that “the sun will not be taxed”. In January, Bolsonaro had already said that, after conversations with the top of Congress, taxation on the activity was “buried”.

The president started to take a more firm position on the subject after a resolution by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) provided for changes in subsidies for the compensation of energy produced in photovoltaic plants. The measure was later revised.

Solar plant, located in the state of Goiás

The solar plant, located in the state of Goiás, belongs to Grupo diRoma and is made up of 26 distributed generation projects located in the municipality of Caldas Novas (GO) and has an installed capacity of 5,6 MWp, capable of serving the equivalent of 4.265 families.

“And when I look here to the right and see a mini farm or an urban farm with photovoltaic panels, I get emotional. Also due to entrepreneurship and it is difficult to undertake in this country, we are helping the legislation with the support of your lordship, dear deputy, dear deputies here from the bench of Goiás, the work is yours too for us to make Brazil lighter with less bureaucracy, less rules so that this becomes possible and we have already worked a lot in this direction” declared the President at the inauguration ceremony.

With resources originating from nature – solar radiation -, the use of solar sources to generate electricity is a strong ally in preserving the environment. In 20 years, the plant inaugurated today will prevent around 12.053 tons of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere. This is equivalent to planting 956 trees.

According to data from the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), there are currently 3.900 solar power plants, with centralized generation, in operation across the country. In Distributed Generation, Brazil has more than 280 plants, with around 3.600 MW of installed capacity. Of this amount, 198 MW refer to 12.252 plants located in the state of Goiás, of which 43% (5.290) were connected to the network from January to mid-August this year.

Encouraging the generation of clean, renewable electricity is one of the flags of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), which this year achieved exemption from import taxes for solar energy equipment and the creation of “green debentures”.

According to the 2029 Ten-Year Electric Energy Plan (PDE 2029), under current rules, the installed capacity of solar sources in centralized projects will increase from 2,1 GW to 10,6 GW in 10 years and distributed generation will reach the mark of 11 GW.

The MME's strategic vision is to invest in matrix diversification, increasing the insertion of renewable sources with greater economic rationality. Currently, clean sources (hydroelectric, wind, biomass and solar) represent about 83% of the installed capacity for generating electricity in Brazil, placing Brazil's electricity matrix among the cleanest in the world.
