With extensive experience in the oil and gas industry and a vast coastline conducive to constant winds, Rio de Janeiro is well positioned to become a benchmark in offshore wind energy.
The State of Rio de Janeiro is at the forefront of the development of wind power offshore in Brazil, as announced last Friday (21/07). The State Secretariat for Energy and Economy of the Sea, responsible for the project, informed that it will carry out the first pilot project to test the viability of implanting offshore wind farms in the region. Last Wednesday (19/07), the secretariat brought together leaders from more than 20 companies and associations in the oil and gas, port logistics, power generation and industries sectors to discuss the creation of this innovative model in the north of the state.

Rio de Janeiro's potential for large-scale projects and production of low-carbon hydrogen
The Secretary of Energy and Economy of the Sea, Hugo Leal, highlighted the importance of the pilot project to evaluate several factors in a controlled environment.
Such as technological feasibility, cost reduction and the potential for developing large-scale projects in the State.
Furthermore, Leal emphasized that the project represents a significant step towards low-carbon hydrogen production in Rio de Janeiro.
One of the crucial aspects of the project is the measurement of the winds and the verification of the energy generation capacity.
As well as the performance of turbines and environmental issues related to marine fauna and flora.
To this end, the Working Group designated for the project will work together with the development of projects that are currently being processed in the National Congress, with a special focus on the regulatory issue of offshore wind farms.
Offshore wind energy pilot project marks an important advance for clean and sustainable energy generation in Brazil
Although the regulation of offshore wind farms was established by decree in the previous government, it has not yet been fully regulated.
In this sense, a bill proposed by the current president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, until then a senator, is also being discussed in Congress with the same regulation objective.
The technical undersecretary for Energy and Economy of the Sea, Felipe Peixoto, highlighted the competitive advantages of Rio de Janeiro in relation to other regions of the country.
According to Peixoto, with a coastline of 636 kilometers, Rio de Janeiro has enormous potential for generating clean energy.
In addition, the region has constant winds and valuable experience in offshore projects, acquired over 50 years with the oil and gas industry, and consolidated port infrastructure.
With the pioneering spirit of this pilot project, Rio de Janeiro is positioned as a reference in the development of offshore wind energy in the country.
The initiative brings promising perspectives for the energy sector, as well as boosting the search for cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, in line with the goals of reducing carbon emissions and tackling climate change.
The success of this project could open doors for future investments in renewable energy and strengthen Brazil's position as a player in the global offshore wind energy scenario.
