With extensive experience in the field and practical knowledge, GE looks forward to delivering operational excellence to its customers.
Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), one of the largest steel producers in Latin America, hired GE Power to fill its converter at the Volta Redonda/RJ steel plant. Located in the city in question, the Presidente Vargas Steelworks has an annual production capacity of 5,8 million tons of steel. Being one of the oldest and largest in Brazil, it was inaugurated in the 40s, and since then it has been served by the company GE.
CSN's objective is to improve the Plant's reliability and efficiency. The multinational will supply the plant with an innovative drive system that includes a 12 megawatt (MW) synchronous motor, a converter to replace the old one and a 12MW generator.
Operating at a frequency of 50 hertz, the new converter will be used to supply energy to existing equipment, as the pumps will use water from the river close to the steel process.
According to CSN's senior development engineer, Douglas Gualberto, the factory was built 40 years ago and some equipment needs to be renovated. They rely on GE's technology and capabilities to provide upgrade services that will help keep the plant one of the most productive in the region.
According to Azeez Mohammed, president and CEO of GE's Power Conversion business division, with his vast experience and know-how in supplying electrical equipment, which supplies steel mills around the world, they will continue to serve the sector , only with more energy-efficient and reliable technology that will help customers deliver operational excellence.
