State is one of the pioneers in using this new technique to produce electricity

The state of Alagoas is moving forward by adopting a new way to generate electricity: from methane gas emitted from waste in landfills. This is done through the installation of the 1st biogas plant in the state, made on March 17, 2022, capable of producing clean energy by reusing compounds. This feat has already reduced merchants' electricity bills by up to 12% and the forecast is that this percentage will only increase.

The investment for the construction of the Greater Maceió Waste Treatment Center was more than R$8 million, by the Alagoas Ambiental group. The plant's production capacity is enough to supply more than 4 homes, with a total of 8,5 GWh per year. The millionaire investment was made after a few years of research for the team to be able to adjust the amount of methane gas needed to make the engine work. Biogas is the result of several stages of processing urban solid waste and will generate savings in the electricity bill of residents and traders

For biogas production from urban solid waste, some processing steps are necessary. First, the waste undergoes natural decomposition, which causes the resulting gases, particularly methane, to rise. Then they are collected by pipes and guided to a treatment plant.

The process continues with the treatment of this biogas, by removing impurities and aqueous components. This is done so that these particles and water do not spoil the engine in the long run. Finally, the methane gas is directed to the engine and makes it work, generating electricity. This reuse of gas is also great for the environment, as it prevents contamination by releasing it into nature without any kind of treatment.

Thus, the trend is for consumers to save on their electricity bills, especially merchants. The first biogas plant in Alagoas already supplies some establishments that use medium and low voltage, as a way of testing and adjusting the functioning and supply of renewable energy.

Alagoas Ambiental, responsible for the biogas plant, plans to install two more plants in 2022

Alagoas Ambiental did the millionaire investment and delivered the state's first biogas plant in early 2022. However, it still plans to build and deliver two more later this year, with a production capacity of up to 1000 KWh each.

“Alagoas Ambiental currently has two waste treatment plants in operation in the state: one in the municipality of Pilar (metropolitan region) and another in Craíbas (in the agreste region). A third plant is being set up in the municipality of Delmiro Gouveia (sertão). Our first biogas energy generation plant is located at the Pilar plant. In 2022, two more power generation plants will be installed at the center located in Craíbas, with a generation capacity of 1000 kWh each, and the second generation plant in Pilar”

Companies can join the project and receive a 10 to 12% discount on electricity bills, as it becomes self-generating and has a relationship with the consortium.
