The Ministry of Infrastructure foresees investments of BRL 370 million over 25 years and about 7 thousand direct and indirect jobs in Bahia after approval this week by the TCU, for the concession to the private sector of the port terminals of ATU12 and ATU18, at Porto Aratu-Candeias, located in Baía de Todos os Santos. Another millionaire investment in the state, New Biodiesel plant authorized by the state government will generate over a thousand jobs

On social networks, the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas celebrated the TCU's decision and stated that the auction for the lease of the terminals should take place later this year. “Attention Bahia, spot auction. TCU approved leasing projects in the Port of Aratu. ATU12 and ATU18, intended for the movement of minerals and plants, will be auctioned in 2020,” wrote Gomes.

The strategic importance of port terminals in the Port of Aratu – Bahia

The port terminals are of strategic importance in the flow of agricultural production of solid bulk, especially soy and fertilizers, from the region called Matopiba, which covers the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia. ATU12 is a brownfield project of approximately 190 m², with an expected average handling of two million tons/year. Investments of approximately R$ 250 million are foreseen, over a period of 25 years, in interventions such as the construction of a new warehouse; implementation of a system for treating liquid effluents from the pier, including drainage; deepening dredging of the berth; acquisition of equipment for unloading ships; expansion of the conveyor belt system, generating around 5 jobs in Bahia

The ATU18, also for solid bulk, has an estimated area of ​​51,6 m² and is projected to handle 8 million tons/year at the end of the contract. Investments planned for this terminal amount to R$ 120 million, over the 15-year period of the contract, with the construction of five new storage silos; expansion and widening of the platform; deepening dredging of the berth; acquisition of equipment for loading ships and acquisition of conveyor belt transport system, expected to generate more than 2 direct and indirect jobs in Bahia.

According to the database of the Companhia das Docas do Estado da Bahia (Codeba), from January to July 2020, 236 cargo ships docked at the Port of Aratu, handling a volume of 2.787.157 tons of liquid and gaseous products, and bulk solids, such as iron, manganese and copper ores, urea, fertilizers, naphtha, propylene and copper concentrate.

Linked to the National Secretariat of Ports and Waterway Transport of the Ministry of Infrastructure, the codeba is responsible for the administration and commercial exploitation of the organized ports in Bahia: Aratu-Candeias, Ilhéus and Salvador.
