Shell, BP and Chevron are teaming up to study the new renewable fuel known as geological hydrogen.

While efforts to move the planet away from fossil fuels focus primarily on wind and solar energy, mounting scientific evidence suggests that there is an untapped source of clean, renewable energy underground: hydrogen formed by natural geological processes. 

The search for this renewable energy source has created a race between several drilling startups, all competing to be the first to find large deposits. Large energy companies such as Shell, BP and Chevron, are also joining a consortium to study geological hydrogen.
