President of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro ordered the PF, Navy and MMA to investigate causes and responsibilities for oil sludge on the Northeast coast.
More than 100 tons of oil sludge off the coast of the Northeast have been collected by teams from the environmental agencies Ibama and ICMBio since the beginning of September, informed the Minister of the Environment, Ricardo Salles, this Monday, October 7th. According to Petrobras the material is crude oil not compatible with substrates extracted in Brazil and may have come from Venezuela.
The comment, on Twitter, was published after the minister went to Sergipe to inspect regions impacted by the oil, which has been spreading along the northeast coast since last month.

“Since September 2, teams from the Ibama and ICMBio, (have worked) together with the 42 municipalities (impacted by the stains), the Navy and other agencies in the collection of more than 100 tons of oil sludge”, wrote Salles.
The government of Sergipe declared a state of emergency in the municipalities affected by the oil. The measures taken were taken due to the appearance of an extensive oil stain on Praia dos Artistas, in Coroa do Meio. The beach was closed due to the presence of the material, which is toxic.
President Jair Bolsonaro determined in a decree, published on Saturday, October 5, an investigation into the causes and who is responsible for the oil spill that has been hitting the northeastern coast for a month.
In the order, Bolsonaro determined that, within 48 hours, the data collected and the measures taken on the environmental problem should be presented.
The investigation must be carried out by the Federal Police, Navy Command, Ibama (Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) and ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation).
The Federal Police launched an inquiry, on the 2nd, to investigate the oil spill on the Northeast coast. The MPF (Federal Public Ministry) in the state also investigates the environmental disaster.
