Oil that hit Northeast beaches arrives in Rio de Janeiro

Rio's beaches are at risk of closure after the arrival of "crude oil". Rio is the eleventh state affected by the spill whose origin is still unknown.

After confirming that the oil spill that reached the coast of the Northeast and Espírito Santo reached the state of Rio de Janeiro, the Public Prosecutor's Office of the state informed that it assesses the need for interdiction of Praia de Grussaí, on the north coast of Rio de Janeiro, where oil fragments were detected. In October, we at Click Petróleo e Gás informed that oil on beaches in the Northeast would arrive in Rio de Janeiro.

The Monitoring and Evaluation Group (GAA), formed by the Brazilian Navy (MB), the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) and the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), informed this Saturday, 23, that Friday 22 , small fragments of the material – about 300 grams – called “crude oil”, were found and removed on Grussaí Beach, in São João da Barra, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

The material was analyzed by the Institute for the Study of the Sea Almirante Paulo Moreira (IEAPM) and found to be "compatible with the oil found on the coast of the Northeast region and Espírito Santo", the group said in the text.

Since the weekend, a group of MB soldiers has been in place to monitor and clean the affected area, with the collaboration of servers from the Ibama.

The advance of the oil slick in national waters prompted a comment by President Jair Bolsonaro. That on Saturday, he said there is no way of knowing how much oil was spilled near the Brazilian coast.

For the president, it is necessary to prepare for the worst scenario. “We would very much like it to be identified who, in my opinion, committed this criminal act.

Now, we don't know how much oil is in the sea. In the worst case, an oil tanker, if it has thrown all its cargo into the sea, less than 10% has reached our coast yet. Let's prepare for the worst. We ask God that this does not happen ”, he said during an event at Vila Militar in Rio de Janeiro.

According to Ibama monitoring, the oil spill reached 720 municipalities on the Brazilian coast. The disaster was initially identified on the beaches of the state of Paraíba, in August.

It then spread in large numbers across the Northeast. In early November, the stain reached the state of Espírito Santo (Southeast) and north of Rio. Thus, the number of Brazilian states affected by the pollutant rose to eleven.
