The cargo, with around 140 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), will be used in the commissioning of the terminal and the thermoelectric plant UTE GNA I.
Gás Natural Açu estimates that in the first half of this year, the plant, which has an installed capacity of 1,34 gigawatts (GW), will start operating.
At the end of last year, the government of Rio de Janeiro granted the operating license. The project is part of an electrical park that will have two thermal plants and the project that involves the regasification terminal,
With about five days of operation, the first cargo of the Porto do Açu terminal was supplied by the BP gas tanker Kmarin Emerald.
According to Gás Natural Açu, the LNG was transferred to the FSRU BW Magna, an integral part of the asset, which has the capacity to regasify and handle up to 21 million cubic meters of gas per day.
“We concluded another important stage of the GNA project very efficiently… We are getting closer and closer to the commercial operation of our first plant”, said Bernardo Perseke, CEO of GNA.
According to BP, the operation with natural gas is “a milestone” for Brazil's energy transition. The president of the oil company in Brazil, Mario Lindenhayn, also believes that gas plays a role in the company's environmental goals.
“We have the ambition to be a carbon neutral company by 2050, and gas is part of this process. The arrival of the first LNG shipment is a milestone for the progress of the project that will bring even more investment and diversity to the Brazilian energy portfolio,” he said.
