Porto do Açu has already become one of the most relevant in the country and is now targeting the production of offshore wind energy. The company Prumo Logística will make billionaire investments over the next few years to make the complex a reference in the energy market.

In operation for seven years and one of the most important ports in the country in terms of cargo handling, Porto do Açu now seeks to become a major renewable energy hub. Prumo Logística, operator of the complex, is forecasting R$ 22 billion investments in offshore wind energy over the next five years at the complex located in Rio de Janeiro.

Porto do Açu aims at offshore wind energy as a market focus for the next five years, with billionaire investments for the sector

Porto do Açu, located in the north of the state of Rio de Janeiro, is currently among the 10 busiest ports in Brazil and seeks to further expand its presence in the domestic market.

For this, the company Prumo Logística is betting on a low carbon operation and development of renewable projects for the next five years, focusing on the current highlight of the national market, offshore wind energy.

Plans include becoming the country's largest offshore wind power hub (at sea), with a capacity equivalent to 2,4 Itaipu power plants, and receiving green hydrogen production plants.

“The new strategy is an industry based on energy transformation. It's not a transformation, it's a revolution, the opening of a new market for a new Brazil. This can be as relevant to the Brazilian economy as agribusiness is today”, highlights Rogério Zampronha, president of Prumo Logística.

He also stated that the company's objective with the investments of BRL 22 billion planned for the next five years is to develop the Port of Açu as the main low-carbon hub in Latin America.

The complex is still one of the most relevant in terms of employability in the port sector, as it currently has 19 companies installed on site, employing 7 workers and contracting around 300 suppliers.

Investments in infrastructure and operational quality have been bringing great results and, in 2021, the complex moved 55,7 million tons, ranking seventh in the national ranking, according to data from the National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq).

Port complex intends to take advantage of industrial development and proximity to commercialization for investments in offshore wind energy

One of the main positive and attractive points for offshore wind energy companies that will invest in Porto do Açu over the next few years is its location.

This is because the Rio de Janeiro complex is located in an area of strong industrial development and is close to the commercialization and transmission market for the electrical network.

And, as the installation of parks requires the assembly of gigantic towers, the industrial district will be able to receive manufacturing plants or final assembly of this equipment.

The complex will also be able to serve as an operational base for service providers to offshore wind energy projects.

Prumo Logística also intends to invest in the production of green hydrogen in the port complex, with the strategy of integrating with production chains that may be installed in the industrial district and not just in large plants for export.

Finally, the Port of Açu intends to strengthen its position as a base for providing services to the oil and gas industry and as a logistics hub, ensuring a concentration of operations in the region.
