Oil extracted in Rio de Janeiro already accounts for 83% of the national total

It is not new that Rio de Janeiro has a leading position on the national scene when we think of oil and gas. However, the state advanced by leaps and bounds last year, showing a growth of 13% in its oil reserves. Such data were obtained in comparison to the year 2021 by the Anuário do Petróleo.

Thus, Rio de Janeiro accumulates a production that corresponds to 83% of the national total, that is, something around 12 billion barrels. These data were released last Wednesday afternoon (15) by the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan). The state of Rio was responsible for 95% of new oil volumes, but there was a drop in the drilling of offshore wells

According to data released by Firjan, the state of Rio was responsible for 95% of new volumes in 2022, having a significant participation in the expansion of oil and gas in Brazil. After all, of the 17 new exploratory wells in Brazil, 12 were drilled in Rio de Janeiro. However, the drilling of offshore wells suffered significant drops of 22% in the state and 27% in the country, in 2022.

The Campos and Santos Basins, the largest in the country, also saw an increase in well drilling in 2022, when compared to 2021. In this sense, the increase was 10% for the Campos Basin against almost 14% in the Santos Basin.

Rio de Janeiro's oil and gas collections will make the state one of the largest national energy centers

According to notes made by Luiz Césio Caetano, the vice-president of Firjan, in an interview with Agência Brasil, Rio de Janeiro has everything to be one of the largest national energy centers. After all, oil works as the “flagship” and expands the potential for generating new jobs.

Furthermore, the state invests heavily in the diversification of the energy matrix, which contributes to progress in sustainability and energy transition. In this way, Rio de Janeiro is increasingly entering an energy market that is growing every day. And of course Macaé has great contribution in this case.

In addition, the amounts raised with oil and gas in 2022 contribute to the state investing even more in the segment. In this sense, the average value of a barrel last year surpassed the maximum of US$ 100, something not seen since 2013. However, production reached the incredible level of 2,53 million barrels a day, an increase of 7,5% compared to 2021.

Diesel, gasoline and kerosene also emerged with increased production in 2022

Os petroleum derivatives were also highlighted in 2022. After all, the production of diesel in the state grew 31% in 2022 and, of gasoline A, 81%. In addition, aviation kerosene increased by 62% and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by 16%. All of this is the result of investments made in the amount of R$ 140 million in 2021.

However, due to this high production and the need for more renewable matrices, the state imported biofuels from other states. Thus, Rio de Janeiro was able to maintain the proper mixing proportions.

Finally, it is worth noting that the state is investing more and more in technology to make oil extraction and production of derivatives cheaper. The destination is obvious: it won't take long for Rio de Janeiro to become one of the biggest national energy centers.
