Shell and BYD have entered into a partnership and opened the largest electric car charging station in the world. The charging station for electric vehicles has 258 charging points.

Shell announced this Monday (18) that it has opened the largest electric vehicle charging station in the world. The venture, in partnership with BYD, is located next to Shenzhen airport, in China, with 258 charging points, as well as solar panels with a generation capacity of 300 thousand kilowatt-hours per annum.

Shell currently operates around 800 charging stations

According to data from Reuters, the electric car charging station is operated as a joint venture between Shell and China's electric vehicle giant BYD. Shell currently operates around 800 charging stations through joint ventures or wholly owned subsidiaries across China.

It is important to highlight that Tesla also has one of the largest charging points in the world in China and California, however, the locations have spaces for just over 100 cars, placing Shell's venture as the current leader.

A Shell has invested heavily in the electric vehicle market, as well as other oil companies. Until last year, the network had 8 thousand charging points, including options in Brazil. A project released by the company in 2022, foresees 35 charging stations spread across the country by March of this year.

The company also announced with the ABB E-mobility a few months ago a plan to launch the first national network of Terra 360 chargers, the world's fastest electric car charger, in Germany.

Shell and BYD are committed to the electric vehicle market

With this charging station for electric cars, Shell demonstrates a comprehensive commitment to innovation. However, the company is not just limited to electric vehicle (EV) technology. It is also focusing its efforts on artificial intelligence (AI) as part of a strategy to increase efficiency and production in its core business sector: offshore oil exploration.

Earlier this year, Shell announced a partnership with SparkCognition, a company specializing in big data analysis. This partnership focuses on applying advanced technology to process and analyze substantial volumes of seismic data, aiming to identify new oil reservoirs.

BYD and Shell also signed a partnership to serve 100 electric vehicle customers

In April this year, BYD and Shell announced that they will provide at least 100 European customers with an exclusive Shell Recharge network, which offers discounted charging at Shell fast and ultrafast charging locations. The network will offer BYD customers access to more than 300 charging stations across Europe through Shell's growing network of street-side charging points, mobility hubs, Shell stations and one of the largest roaming networks in Europe.

Commercial customers who purchase electric cars from BYD to electrify their fleets can also access it through the Shell Card.

A Shell Fleet Solutions offers business customers an extensive range of products and services to manage their fleets efficiently and sustainably, including the hybrid card, a single payment solution that covers billing for traditional fuels, electric and low-carbon alternative fuels.

According to BYD Europe and International Cooperation Division General Manager Michael Shu, the company is excited to partner with Shell to offer BYD customers exclusive membership to leading public charging solutions. With the agreement, BYD customers will have access to the largest charging station network in Europe.
