Toyota's new battery will have four versions and promises to completely change the global electric car market. The new technology will meet the demand for 1,7 million electric cars.
Toyota has entered the electric car sector once and for all and, after announcing a new exclusive factory for the production of battery-powered vehicles in 2026, the automaker also revealed that it is working on four new state-of-the-art batteries. Some reduce the cost of the vehicle by up to 40% and can deliver a range of 1,2 km.
New Toyota battery will meet demand for 1,7 million electric cars
According to website data Inside EVs, Toyota will have four types of battery. Three of them will have new liquid electrolyte technologies and one will have solid state battery technology. For the company, Toyota's new battery will meet the demand of 1,7 million cars, among the 3,5 million that Toyota plans to sell worldwide by 2030.
According to the website, the brand divided liquid electrolyte batteries, the first type, into three categories: Performance, High Performance and Popularization.
- Volkswagen confirms employees' nightmare: THREE factories will close and mass layoffs will happen
- Assad flees Syria, leaving behind his private fleet of luxury cars, including Mercedes, Porsches, Ferraris and armored SUVs
- Mitsubishi surprises: new hybrid arrives in Brazil in 2025 with 302 hp, 86 km of electric autonomy and 27 km/l!
- Replacing an electric car's battery will be cheaper than repairing a combustion engine, study reveals
This type of device is currently the most used in the electric car industry and Toyota's categorization is linked to improvements towards greater energy density, competitive prices and charging speed.
A Toyota's new performance-oriented battery would provide a range of more than 800 km and a price 20% lower than the bZ4X model. Furthermore, it would recharge in approximately 20 minutes, taking into account improvements made to the models (in relation to weight and aerodynamics) to accommodate it. The new component should arrive in Toyota electric cars from 2026.

Battery type 2: Popularization will have lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry and the intention is to be cheaper, to popularize electric cars. The table provided by the automaker shows that it should cost up to 40% less than the bZ4X. However, its autonomy is shorter, reaching only 600 km, and taking around 30 minutes to charge. This new Toyota battery should hit the market between 2026 and 2027.
The high-performance battery aims to deliver a 10% reduction compared to the current model with a charge of approximately 20 minutes. The difference with this one is its autonomy, which can reach 1 thousand km.
This version should hit the market between 2027 and 2028. Finally, the fourth type of battery, solid state, does not yet have a defined economy, however, it should also generate a range of 1 to 1,2 km. The attraction of this new Toyota battery would be its charging time of just 10 minutes. These should hit the market from 2027, with some still without a defined date.
Toyota advances with solid state batteries
In July, a report published by The Guardian, citing the president of Toyota's research and development center for carbon neutrality Keiji Kaita, stated that the multinational had simplified the production of the material used for produce solid-state and liquid-based batteries, which will make it possible to reduce weight by half, as well as the size and cost of packages that will be installed in electric cars.
Kaita highlights that, for both its liquid and solid-state batteries, the automaker's focus is to drastically change the current situation, in which batteries are very large, expensive and heavy. In terms of potential, Toyota will seek to halve all of these factors.
