The investments of BRL 219 million this year and in 2020, confirmed by the Usiminas steel plant, will require 330 job openings, to attend to the maintenance work on Blast Furnace 2 and operational improvement of the unit.  This month the company announced 500 vacancies for different areas in Ipatinga, stay tuned that soon the company will announce new opportunities.

The steel plant is located in Ipatinga, in the state of Minas Gerais. According to the owner of the plant, the government of the state of Minas Gerais, the investments will be in the purchase of equipment, civil works for reforming the piping and hood systems and works on the dedusting system.

The meeting between the government and the steel company's command that marked the signing of the protocol of intentions took place in September and it was also announced that the blast furnace renovation works will not only create new jobs, but will also increase the useful life of the plant in 20 years.

Right after this refurbishment of Blast Furnace 2, Usiminas’ management will start preparing for the major stoppage that will take place from 2021 onwards.

Thiago Toscano, President of Indi, the investment promotion agency of the State of Minas Gerais, highlighted the importance of increasing the plant's capacity.

“With this, Usiminas will be able to increase its production capacity as early as 2020. The government agreed to defer the ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services) for imported parts without similar national ones. This was one more step towards the steelmaker's major investment in the coming years, which is the refurbishment of blast furnace 3”.

Last year, Blast Furnace 1 consumed R$ 80 million in renovation works, but the plant production was not stopped, together blast furnaces 1 and 2 produce 4 tons of pig iron daily.

Blast furnace 3, which will stop for maintenance in 2021, alone produces 7 tons of pig iron daily, almost twice as much as the other two pieces of equipment.

Blast Furnace 3 has also been in operation for 20 years and the intention is to extend its useful life by 20 years. The total investment in the renovations is estimated at R$ 1,234 billion, confirming Usiminas' confidence in the recovery of the market in the coming years.

Vitor de Mendonça, Secretary of State for Economic Development (Headquarters), believes that the confirmation of investments strengthens the steel industry.
