Cemig invests capital in a solar power plant in Três Marias. The electric power company is making billionaire investments in the state of Minas Gerais until 2025

On Monday, December 20, Cemig inaugurated the Três Marias Photovoltaic Power Plant for Distributed Generation (GD), the first project in a series of plants that are currently under development, within a billionaire investment plan, which until then is the largest in the company’s history, and was announced this year.
 
R$ 22,5 billion will be invested, until 2025, in generation, transmission and distribution of energy, in addition to the generation, distribution and sale of natural gas.

The budget for generations will be R$ 4,6 billion with the objective of adding 1 gigawatt (GW) of installed capacity, through initiatives focused on the use of renewable sources. The company's president, Reynaldo Passanezi Filho, Cemig's Director of Generation and Transmission, Thadeu Carneiro da Silva, Cemig SIM's president, Danilo Gusmão Araújo, as well as regional authorities were present at the inauguration.

The GD solar energy generation plant based in Três Marias is the starting point for Cemig to resume carrying out its own “greenfield” projects, ranging from initial technical studies to construction and operation of the enterprise. The construction of the plant started in April 2021 and had invested capital of R$ 12 million to be installed.

The new solar power plant has more than 5 photovoltaic panels and will have 40% of the energy produced directed to Cemig GT's own consumption, while the other 60% will be sold by the company.

The importance of the new photovoltaic plant

Cemig's president, Reynaldo Passanezi Filho, assessed the importance of opening the new facility. “This is a very special moment for all of us at Cemig. This plant shows our capacity to grow again, to resume the development of the company after many years”, evaluated the president.

 Cemig’s director of Generation and Transmission, Thadeu Carneiro da Silva, also added that “In situations of water crisis, as Brazil has recently experienced, solar energy generated by this type of plant is an additional resource to alleviate the use of hydroelectric reservoirs”.

Other investments

In addition to this venture, Cemig is offering an open tender to build three more solar parks that, together, will add up to more than 270 peak megawatts (MWp) of installed capacity. The expectation is that these plants will start to be built in April of next year to be delivered from January 2023. 

In addition to the Três Marias solar plant, Cemig plans to build two other floating solar plants in the hydroelectric plant's reservoir, with 78 and 273 MWp of installed capacity. The forecast is that the first plant will be delivered in 2023.
