The plant will be installed in the area of the Suape Industrial Complex. The project also includes a LNG regasification terminal, as well as the installation of about 8 kilometers of pipelines between the gas terminal and the power plant.
Scheduled to begin operations in November 2021, the thermal power plant will have a total installed capacity to generate 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of energy, which corresponds to 30% more than the Sobradinho hydroelectric plant.

The preliminary license for the project was issued by the Pernambuco Environmental Agency (CPRH).
The American group New Fortress Energy acquired the Santa Catarina company CH4 Energia, which planned to install a thermal plant in Suape before 2018. It is this project that already had the preliminary license and a letter of intent with the government of Pernambuco with the area designated for the project defined.
Other Energy and Gas Projects by the New Fortress Energy Group in Brazil
The New Fortress Energy group also “acquired” two projects that were from Petrobras and planned to install two thermal plants: one in Pecém, Ceará, and another in Salvador, Bahia.
These two projects are important because both won auctions – held by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) – to sell energy. The commitments made in these auctions will ensure the purchase of the electricity to be produced by the future thermal power plant, remunerating the investment to be made.
The energy auctions won by the projects that were from Petrobras had the expectation that the electricity supply would occur in the first half of this year. The plant that will be installed in Suape will be supplied by an LNG regasification ship, with a capacity to inject 21 million cubic meters per day and should be docked at the Multipurpose Wharf.
According to the State Government, the excess LNG could supply the network of the Pernambuco Gas Company (Copergás), the company that holds the rights to gas distribution in the State. “With the installation of the thermal plant in Suape, the Government of Pernambuco also enables a large regasification terminal for the State, offering gas at much more competitive prices to local industries,” emphasized Governor Paulo Câmara (PSB) via his office. “And with the new gas law, which is already in the Alepe, a much larger contingent of companies could migrate to the free market and benefit from the new terminal, generating a boost in expansions and new ventures in the State,” he added. The free market is one in which the large consumer can choose the company that will supply the gas. The limited availability of gas in the State has always been a barrier to the greater use of this fuel in the productive sector. Generally, gas is cheaper than electricity.
