The plant will be installed in the area of the Suape Industrial Complex. The project also includes an LNG regasification terminal, in addition to the installation of approximately 8 kilometers of pipelines between the gas terminal and the thermal plant.

Scheduled to start operating in November 2021, the thermoelectric plant will have the total installed capacity to generate 1,3 gigawatts (GW) of energy, which corresponds to 30% more than the Sobradinho hydroelectric plant.

The preliminary license for the project was issued by the Environment Agency of Pernambuco (CPRH).

The North American group New Fortress Energy bought the Santa Catarina company CH4 Energia that planned to install a thermal in Suape before 2018. It is this project that already had the previous license and a protocol of intention with the government of Pernambuco with the area that would receive the defined enterprise.

Other New Fortress Energy group power and gas projects in Brazil

The New Fortress Energy group also “bought” two projects that belonged to Petrobras and that provided for the installation of two thermal plants: one in Pecém, Ceará, and another in Salvador, Bahia.

These two projects are important because both won auctions – held by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) – to sell energy. It is the commitments signed in these auctions that will guarantee the purchase of energy to be produced by the future thermoelectric plant, remunerating the investment to be made.

The energy auctions won by the projects that belonged to Petrobras had the forecast that the electricity supply would occur in the first half of this year. The plant that will be installed in Suape will be supplied by an LNG regasifier vessel, with the capacity to inject 21 million cubic meters per day and must be moored at the Multipurpose Pier.

According to the State Government, the excess LNG will be able to serve the network of the Companhia de Gás de Pernambuco (Copergás), the company that holds the gas distribution rights in the State. “With the installation of the thermoelectric plant in Suape, the Government of Pernambuco also makes possible a large regasification terminal for the State, offering gas at much more competitive prices to local industries”, emphasized Governor Paulo Câmara (PSB) via advisory. “And with the new gas law, which is already in place in Alepe, a much larger contingent of companies could migrate to the free market and benefit from the new terminal, generating an impetus for expansions and new undertakings in the State”, he added. Free market is one in which the large consumer can choose the company that will supply the gas. The limited availability of gas in the State has always been a barrier to greater use of this fuel in the productive sector. Generally, gas is cheaper than electricity.
