The Volkswagen Gol Special 1.0 of 2004 stood out as one of the cheapest 0KM cars in Brazil, bringing robustness and amazing fuel efficiency in a compact package.

Two decades ago, Volkswagen revolutionized the Brazilian automotive market with the launch of the Volkswagen Gol Special 1.0. In 2004, for less than R$ 20 thousand, you could drive out of the dealership with a 0KM in hand. Today, with a list price of R$ 11,743, the Gol Special 1.0 has been affectionately nicknamed “tank of war” due to its durability, consumption, and resilience, features that made it one of the favorites among Brazilians.

Engine of the Volkswagen Gol Special 1.0 of 2004

The Volkswagen Gol Special 1.0 of 2004 was not only the cheapest 0KM car on the market but also one of the most reliable and economical. Equipped with an EA111 engine, 4 inline cylinders, and 54.1 hp at 5000 rpm, it delivered a torque of 8.5 kgfm at 3250 rpm, providing a power-to-weight ratio of 16.85 kg/hp. The simplicity of the engine, with natural aspiration and multi-point fuel injection, was one of the main attractions for those looking for a car that wouldn’t cause headaches.

Compact Hatchback That Accommodated The Whole Family

With 5 seats and a trunk of 285 liters, the Volkswagen Gol Special 1.0 was a compact hatchback that offered practicality for everyday use. The independent McPherson front suspension and the rear with a torsion axle, both with coil springs, ensured a safe ride, despite lacking power steering. The solid disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear completed the safety package.

The Gol’s Fuel Efficiency Was A Beauty For Brazilians

The performance of the Gol Special 1.0 was also surprising for its time. Reaching a top speed of 147 km/h and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 17.4 seconds, it was not a race car, but it did its job well as an urban vehicle. In terms of fuel consumption, it displayed its efficiency: 12.2 km/l in the city and 15.7 km/l on the highway, providing a range of up to 801 km on highways.

Maintenance? Okay

One of the highlights of the Volkswagen Gol Special 1.0 was its maintenance cost. The depreciation over time, as seen in the price reduction to around R$ 11,743, reflected a market that recognized the Gol Special 1.0 as a durable and reliable option. Even with the IPVA exempt and no fixed price for revisions, the car remained relevant among used vehicles, showing that its simplicity still had a place in the hearts of Brazilian drivers.

Cool Comfort With A Lot Of Simplicity

In terms of comfort, the Gol Special 1.0 was basic but met the needs of those looking for a functional car. Without power steering and with a 5-speed manual transmission, it required a more active driving style from the driver. However, for many, this simplicity was charming, reminiscent of a time when control of the car was entirely in the hands of the driver.

Volkswagen Gol Special 1.0 Is A Part Of Brazil’s History

Over these 20 years, the Volkswagen Gol Special 1.0 has solidified itself as an icon of the Brazilian automotive industry. For many, it was their first car, a road companion that brought countless stories and memories. Even with the passage of time and the emergence of more modern and technological models, the Gol Special 1.0 is still fondly remembered by automotive enthusiasts.

This “tank of war” from Volkswagen not only marked a generation but also left a legacy of resilience, economy, and simplicity that continues to live in the hearts of many Brazilian drivers. And, even after two decades, the Volkswagen Gol Special 1.0 is still celebrated as one of the most iconic and accessible cars that ever drove the streets of Brazil.

Did you enjoy reminiscing about this Volkswagen classic? Did the Volkswagen Gol Special 1.0 also play a role in your history or that of someone you know? Let us know in the comments! We want to know if you’ve had one of these “tanks of war” or if you have good memories of it. Who knows, your story might inspire other car enthusiasts!
