Valencia expanded the renewal of public transport with the entry of 26 new electric buses, more than doubling the fleet of this type in circulation and advanced in the plan to achieve, by 2027, a system with 93% clean vehicles.
Valencia expanded this week its fleet of electric and hybrid buses with the incorporation of 26 new vehicles by the Municipal Transport Company (EMT), in another step of the city’s public transport renewal plan. This measure is part of a strategy by the city hall to increase the share of clean vehicles in operation and achieve, by 2027, a fleet that is 93% clean.
The official presentation of part of the new vehicles was attended by the mayor of Valencia, María José Catalá, the Mobility councilor and president of the EMT, Jesús Carbonell, and the general director of the municipal company, Manuel Martínez Grau. During the event, 14 of the new units were displayed, pointed out by the mayor as a direct advancement in the environmental quality of the city.
The new vehicles arrive after the entry into circulation last year of 31 articulated hybrid buses, also incorporated into the municipal system. With this, the city continues to adopt more sustainable technologies in urban public transport.

Plan foresees expansion of electric buses by 2027
Currently, 22 fully electric buses operate in Valencia, and the immediate arrival of 26 new vehicles more than doubles the number of this type of unit in operation on the city’s streets. The incorporation is part of a broader project to renew the EMT fleet.
According to the plan announced by the city hall, the municipal company will acquire 222 new vehicles, with a total investment of 118 million euros. The goal is that, by the end of this process, the fleet in 2027 will be larger, renewed, and predominantly composed of clean technologies.
María José Catalá stated that when the current administration took over the municipal administration in 2023, the EMT fleet still had very old vehicles. According to the mayor, at that time only 60% of the buses were considered clean, a category that includes hybrid and electric models.
The mayor declared that the decision was then made to create a strategic plan to renew the EMT operation with the purchase of 222 buses. According to her, this process will lead the city to achieve, by 2027, a fleet that is 93% clean.
Fleet renewal will be done gradually
Catalá also stated that the renewal has already begun and that new vehicles will continue to arrive progressively in the coming months. According to the mayor, 57 buses have already been delivered, and the others will be incorporated monthly until the total planned is reached.
The municipal administration maintains that this expansion will improve the service provided by the EMT. The expectation is that the combination of a renewed fleet, a greater number of vehicles, and an increase in the share of clean models will have a direct impact on the functioning of public transport in the city.
During the announcement, the mayor again highlighted the volume of investment and the scale of the project. According to her, the goal is to ensure, by 2027, a network operated by more modern, more numerous buses with a more favorable environmental profile.
New line expands connection between neighborhoods and hospital
In addition to the fleet renewal, the city hall reported that it continues to expand and reinforce the network of lines to improve connectivity between different areas of Valencia. In this context, the new Line 59 of the EMT was announced to start operations on March 9.
The new line will connect residents of Sociópolis, in the district of La Torre, directly to Doctor Peset hospital, the city center, and the districts of Jesús and Patraix. The initial operation will be carried out with five buses, with an estimated frequency of between 18 and 21 minutes.
According to Catalá, the creation of the line aims to respond to a long-standing demand for connectivity from the residents of Sociópolis. The mayor stated that this measure will end the lack of proper connection faced by the population in the area after many years without a solution.
The city hall also reported that the intention is to gradually improve the service of the new line as new vehicles arrive at the EMT. The goal announced is to reduce the interval between trips until achieving a frequency of ten minutes.
This reinforcement is expected to be complemented in the future with the creation of the circular line C59. The proposal is to connect the center of Valencia to the districts of Castellar-l’Oliveral, Forn d’Alcedo, and La Torre, expanding mobility options for residents of these areas.
