Saab confirmed that it will use production lines in Brazil and Sweden to fulfill the contract signed with Colombia, which provides for the delivery of 17 Gripen fighters over the next five years. Information from Reuters.
The company stated last week that it has signed a 3.1 billion euro agreement with the Colombian government to supply 17 Gripen fighters over the next five years.
The operation will follow the schedule set by the company, maintaining all the processes planned for the manufacture of the aircraft, including technical items such as brake pads on the involved models.

Production in Two Countries with Brazilian Support
According to Saab’s president, Micael Johansson, the agreement signed on Friday, the 14th, will be fulfilled simultaneously by both assembly lines. He explained that the use of the Brazilian unit is part of the contract and integrates the strategy adopted by the company.
Saab did not detail how many planes will be produced in each country. Johansson just emphasized that both the Swedish and Brazilian structures will be involved in the manufacturing.
Brazilian Line as the Export Center
The assembly line installed in Gavião Peixoto, in the interior of São Paulo, was inaugurated in 2023 within an Embraer factory.
The company had already indicated that it intends to use it as an export center, focusing on clients such as Colombia and Peru.
In the contract signed in 2010, Brazil agreed to purchase 36 Gripens, planning the local production of 15 aircraft. Last year, the Brazilian government reported that it plans to expand this agreement by 25%.
Active Participation of Embraer
In October, the president of Embraer Defense, Bosco da Costa Júnior, stated that the company is ready to collaborate with Saab in exports made from Brazil. He emphasized that the Swedish partner has been relying on Embraer in international campaigns.
Costa also highlighted that the integration between the two companies aims to enhance global delivery capacity. In this context, processes related to essential components, such as brake pads, remain aligned with the program’s requirements.
According to Costa, Embraer is motivated and close to Saab to act as a solution in increasing production capacity. He reinforced that the Brazilian company remains available to contribute as per the demand of the new contract.
