Free Spots at USP for Master’s and Doctorate in Spanish Open Registration in March 2026, with 27 Opportunities for Entry in the Second Semester and Elimination Selection in Five Stages.

The University of São Paulo has opened 27 spots for entry in the second semester of 2026 in the Graduate Program in Spanish Language and Spanish and Latin American Literatures, with registration scheduled from March 4 to March 19 and selection in five elimination stages, according to the announcement published in the Official Gazette of the State.

The opportunities are for academic master’s and doctorate and, as it is a public university, there is no tuition fee; however, the announcement highlights that approval in the process does not guarantee a scholarship and that the availability of scholarships depends on funding agencies.

The document also states that 20% of the spots are reserved for self-declared Black and Brown candidates, Indigenous people, and quilombolas, within an affirmative action policy adopted by the program and applied through the allocation of spots and eligibility scores.

Language Proficiency Required in the Selection for Master’s and Doctorate

One of the central requirements is proficiency in a foreign language, and the candidate must indicate, at the time of registration, which option will be used for this stage, which is eliminatory and is part of the selection process phases.

For the master’s, the option indicated in the announcement is Spanish, while for the doctorate, English, Italian, French, or Spanish are accepted, in the latter case only if proficiency in Spanish has not been previously used or proven in the master’s program.

The announcement emphasizes that registration for the selection process does not automatically equate to registration for the proficiency tests and advises candidates to seek information about the calendar and details from the Language Center of the unit, respecting the rules of the agreement between the center and the programs.

Research Lines in Spanish Language, Translation, and Literature

In the academic structure, the program organizes its research into four lines and asks candidates to indicate their intended line on the application form, aligning the proposed project with the themes and focuses addressed by the faculty.

One of the fronts covers translation studies, comparative studies, and intercultural processes, focusing on translation, cultural circulation, and dialogue between traditions, while another concentrates on studies of linguistic functioning, acquisition, teaching, and learning, with both theoretical and applied approaches.

There is also a line focused on forms and processes in Spanish literature, addressing genres, movements, and literary production, along with an area that discusses aesthetic issues and critical debates in Latin American literature, according to the announcement description.

Elimination Stages: Written Exam, Oral Assessment, and Results

The selection, for both master’s and doctorate, is presented as a process in five stages, all eliminatory, combining language assessment, project analysis, written exam on specific knowledge, and oral assessment of the research proposal.

The first phase is the foreign language proficiency test, and once this stage is passed, the process proceeds to the analysis of the projects, which must demonstrate clarity of objective, methodological consistency, and alignment with the chosen line, according to the criteria specified in the announcement.

Next, candidates take a written exam on specific knowledge in Spanish, also an eliminatory stage, designed to measure content knowledge and academic argumentation capacity within the field of Spanish language and literatures.

After that, the oral assessment of the research proposal takes place, in which the candidate presents and discusses the proposal before a committee, and the final results are released after the completion of the stages, within the schedule set by the program.

Announcement Calendar and Attention to the Rules of the Process

The announcement establishes that the program conducts biannual selection processes and that applications for graduate entry occur twice a year, in March and August, which increases the predictability of the calendar but requires attention to deadlines and rules of each announcement.

For those intending to apply, the document also provides operational alerts, such as the recommendation not to leave application submissions until the last minute due to the risk of system instability, and reinforces that late applications are not accepted or extended.

Another highlighted point is the requirement of completed undergraduate education for enrollment, as well as specific guidance for foreign candidates, who may apply with a passport but must present valid migratory documentation at the time of enrollment, according to the rules listed in the announcement.

In the case of the doctorate, the announcement describes additional requirements related to the master’s degree and the corresponding documentation, including guidelines for candidates with degrees obtained outside USP and, when applicable, equivalence and recognition procedures, within the indicated deadlines.

Thorough reading of the announcement is the way to check requirements, formats, and dates of each stage, in addition to confirming necessary documentation and evaluation criteria, as the document itself emphasizes that failure to comply with the rules may lead to cancellation of the application.

How to Register at USP for Master’s and Doctorate

Registration must be done exclusively online, on the program’s own website, within the established deadline, and the announcement indicates that the form is only available during the registration period, with digital submission of documents in PDF format and specific rules regarding size and quality.

In addition to the form, the program requires academic and identification documentation, such as diplomas and transcripts, and states that applications with documentation not meeting the criteria may be denied, with the announcement of the homologation of the applications expected in early April, according to the announcement calendar.
