Radars With Artificial Intelligence and 4K Cameras Now Monitor Highways in SP and MG, Recording Thousands of Violations for Seatbelts and Cell Phones and Encouraging a Decrease in Accidents in Monitored Sections.

Technology operates day and night, identifies irregular transportation of children, and undergoes human verification before fines are issued.

Anyone traveling during Carnival should consider a recent change in monitoring on the highways of São Paulo and Minas Gerais: radars with artificial intelligence and 4K cameras have begun to register violations beyond speeding, with thousands of fines issued in just a few months.

In one of the monitored sections in the Ribeirão Preto region (SP), the system recorded over 20,000 violations in five months, predominantly for not wearing seatbelts and also for using cell phones while driving.

Violations Caught by 4K Camera and Artificial Intelligence

The technology combines a high-definition camera, sensors, and software trained to recognize prohibited behaviors, such as driving without a seatbelt, handling a cell phone while driving, carrying children without proper restraint devices, and having body parts protruding from the vehicle.

In addition to capturing images, the system automatically separates suspicious occurrences for review, which speeds up the sorting process and increases the chance of catching violations in different lanes, even with heavy traffic and lighting variations.

Reports and materials released on the topic highlight that the technical capability includes monitoring at high speeds, with equipment adapted to identify behaviors even when the vehicle passes quickly through the monitoring point.

Sections in São Paulo With Intelligent Radar in Operation

In the interior of São Paulo, the installation has gained prominence in sections managed by concessionaires, with monitoring points in the Ribeirão Preto region and, in another area, on the Governador Dr. Adhemar Pereira de Barros Highway, linking Campinas and Mogi Mirim.

On the Renovias network, the operation with artificial intelligence has been in place since January 2023 through an automatic detection system capable of recording more than one lane at a time and producing images that aid in identifying the driver.

Data released by the concessionaire itself indicates that, between October 2024 and September 2025, just over 18,700 violations were recorded, with 14,265 cases for not wearing seatbelts and 4,462 occurrences for using cell phones while driving.

The company also states that the images are analyzed and shared with the Highway Patrol, which operates from the Operational Control Center, reinforcing the integration between technology, monitoring, and guidance actions on the highways.

Over 20,000 Violations and Decrease in Accidents in the Monitored Section

In the Ribeirão Preto region, recent publications attributed to the concessionaire indicate more than 20,000 records in five months, concentrated on failure to use seatbelts and a second significant area related to cell phone use while driving.

According to the same line of information, there was a reduction of approximately 30% in accidents in the monitored section after the implementation of the system, a decrease associated with increased awareness of monitoring and the fear of being fined.

Although the data do not detail the type of occurrences avoided, the operational logic is straightforward: the less distraction while driving and the greater the use of safety devices, the lower the risk of collisions and injuries in common highway situations.

Minas Gerais Expands Monitoring With AI in New Sections

In Minas Gerais, the presence of cameras with artificial intelligence has begun to be reported in sections of the Triângulo Mineiro, operating on BR-365 between Uberlândia and Patrocínio, within a model presented as unprecedented on state-conceded highways.

The expansion to the South of Minas is accompanied by the installation of new equipment on highways such as BR-459, MG-290, and LMG-877, with the start of operation announced by the concessionaire and reported by local media.

In this structure, image-based monitoring coexists with traditional speed radars, and the promise is to reduce accidents and organize traffic at urban and crossing points, especially where there is a history of speeding and risky maneuvers.

Why the Fine Is Not Automatic

Despite being labeled as “radar with AI,” the fine does not get issued without human validation, as the system functions as a sorting and evidence-gathering tool, while the final decision depends on verification by responsible monitoring agents.

The very foundational text highlights this directly: “No, artificial intelligence cannot issue fines to drivers,” justifying that occurrences undergo review to reduce misinterpretation and avoid undue penalties.

Fines for Seatbelts, Cell Phone Use, and Child Transportation

Not wearing a seatbelt is a serious offense, with a fine of R$ 195.23 and five points on the driver’s license, and the penalty may also apply to the driver if the passenger is not using the mandatory equipment.

Using a cell phone while driving is considered a very serious offense, with a fine of R$ 293.47 and seven points, and federal agencies emphasize that the prohibition relates to the risk of distraction and the increased chance of accidents.

When transporting children, the general rule is that minors under 10 years old who have not yet reached 1.45 m must sit in the back seat, in an appropriate restraint device, according to Contran regulations and traffic authority guidelines.

With the expansion of smart cameras and the integration with control centers, the trend is that drivers will encounter more sections capable of identifying risky behaviors beyond speeding, including during peak periods, such as extended holidays.

As monitoring becomes more precise and less reliant on physical presence, what more needs to change in driving behavior before fines are issued, and not just after?

Mas dirigir sem o cinto de segurança e falando ao celular não é infração? Oque tem haver com o voto? Qual a dificuldade de andar correto no trânsito? O povo sempre querendo culpar os outros por seus erros.
