The Navy warship, 32,8 tons and 265 meters long, anchored since 2017 in Rio de Janeiro was sold and will become scrap
The largest warship in the history of the Brazilian Navy, the NAe São Paulo, was sold last week for the price of a Porche car to be turned into scrap metal. The sale took place through a virtual auction, in the amount of R$ 10.550.000. The amount paid for the ship corresponds to the value of a Porsche 918 Spyder, which varies between R$ 10 and 12 million. So far, it is not known who was the buyer of the vessel that was deactivated.

The NAe São Paulo was the base for a squadron of McDonnell Douglas A-4 fighter planes, which was renamed AF-1 by the Navy. Now, the aircraft are allocated within an air base, even if adapted to land and take off from ships.
This wasn't the first time the Armed Forces had "renamed" an item. In 2020, the Atlântico Multipurpose Helicopter Carrier was renamed “Airdrome Ship”. At the time, the justification given by the Brazilian Navy for the name change was that the vessel is capable of receiving fixed-wing aircraft and vertical take-off and landing.
The warship, weighing 32,8 tons and measuring 265 meters in length, has been anchored in Rio de Janeiro since 2017, when the government gave up on modernizing the vessel and opted to sell it. Since then, several NGOs have tried to turn it into a museum, while the Brazilian Navy sought to get rid of the equipment.
The largest warship in the history of the Brazilian Navy will become scrap metal
With the sale, the buyer is responsible for transporting the vessel, however, in the case of the NAe São Paulo, of the Navy, it will no longer be possible, as the vessel can no longer take off by its own means, making the new owner have to dismantle it. In this way, he will be able to profit from the scrap metal.
By contractual requirement of France, which built and sold the ship to the Brazilian Navy, it must be dismantled by recycling shipyards approved by the Union European Union, which comply with recycling and toxic waste collection regulations.
