He Was Neither a NASA Scientist Nor an Engineer of a Multinational, But an Electronic Technician from Minas Gerais. Meet the Saga of Nélio Nicolai and His Invention That Forever Changed Our Relationship with the Telephone.

For those who grew up with a smartphone in their pocket, it’s hard to imagine. But there was a time when answering the phone was a leap into the unknown. Each call was a black box, an anonymous interruption that could be anything: good news, a distant relative, a prank, or an unwanted bill collector. It took the brilliance and stubbornness of a Brazilian to end this uncertainty.

This is the story of Bina, the Caller ID, and its creator, Nélio José Nicolai. A saga that involves a brilliant technical insight, a decades-long battle against telecommunications giants, and a cultural shift that for the first time gave us the power to decide whom we would give our time and attention.

The Pre-Bina World: The Era of Anonymous Calls

Until the early 90s, the phone was essentially a reactive tool. When it rang, the only option was to answer to find out who was on the other end. This dynamic created a host of social and security inconveniences, from persistent pranks to the inability to filter work calls outside of hours or unwanted contacts. Privacy was one-sided: the caller knew who they were calling, but the opposite was not true.

The Insight of an Electronic Technician: The Idea That Telecoms Said Was Impossible

The Battle of a One-Man Army: Nélio Nicolai, the Brazilian Genius Who Invented Bina

The revolution began in the mind of Nélio Nicolai, a mining electronic technician who worked at Telebrasília. In 1977, during his maintenance work on telephone exchanges, he had a fundamental realization: for the telephone company to correctly charge for a call, the destination exchange needed to receive the information of the originating number (the “A” number) even before the call was completed to the destination (the “B” number).

The information, therefore, was already there, traveling through the network. The challenge was how to “fish” this information and display it to the “B” user before they picked up the phone. Nicolai developed a project for a device that would do exactly that. When presenting the idea to the telecommunications companies of the time, he repeatedly heard that his proposal was “technically unfeasible” – a standard response to an innovation that could disrupt the existing business model.

‘B-Identifies-A’: The Birth of a Name and a Product

Ignoring the skeptics, Nélio Nicolai continued to develop his idea. He named the project BINA, a simple and brilliant acronym for “B Identifies Number of A”. In 1982, he filed the first patent request for his invention. After years perfecting the prototype at home, he finally found a small electronics company in Belo Horizonte, ATEL, that agreed to take on the challenge of producing the device on a commercial scale.

Launched on the market in 1992, the Bina device was an immediate and resounding success. The small plastic box, with its liquid crystal display, became a coveted object, a status symbol, and, above all, a power and control over one’s own privacy.

The Patent War: David’s Fight Against the Telecommunications Giants

With the success of the device, the major telecommunications operators, which had previously claimed it was impossible, quickly realized the profitable potential of the technology. They began to offer caller ID services directly in their own telephones, without paying Nicolai due royalties for the caller ID patent.

A major battle for his life then began. Nélio José Nicolai, the inventor, spent more than two decades in a grueling and costly legal battle against the giants of the industry to have his rights as a creator recognized. He won several cases, but the execution of the sentences and the collection of the amounts were complex and lengthy processes that drained his health and resources.

The Legacy of Bina: How a Small Box Changed the Culture of Telephone

Nélio Nicolai passed away in 2017, but his legacy is immense and undeniable. Bina not only gave us the convenience of knowing who’s calling; it fundamentally changed social etiquette and the power dynamic of voice communication. It gave us the right not to answer, to filter, to prepare for a conversation.

The function of identifying calls, which he envisioned and fought for, is now so basic and ubiquitous in any smartphone that the new generations can hardly imagine that it didn’t exist one day. It was the invention of a persistent Brazilian who, from his home, gave the entire world the simple yet revolutionary power of choice.

Do you remember the arrival of Bina in your home? What was your first reaction upon seeing the number of the caller before answering? Share your nostalgic memory!
