China Confirms the Commissioning of Destroyers Dongguan and Anqing After Joint Exercises at Sea, Raising the Total of Type 055 Ships in Operation to Ten While Simultaneously Strengthening Its Air Defense, Anti-Submarine Warfare, Aircraft Carrier Escort, and Military Presence in Sensitive Areas of the Current Indo-Pacific

China has officially commissioned two new Type 055 destroyers after state television aired, for the first time, footage of the vessels Dongguan (109) and Anqing (110) participating in joint exercises at sea on March 8, 2026. The confirmation came not only as a fleet update but as a direct demonstration of operational readiness, as the ships appeared integrated with other units of the Chinese navy.

With this incorporation, China has increased its Type 055 destroyers in operation from eight to ten, concretely expanding its capability to carry out complex missions in the Indo-Pacific. The move has strategic significance as it combines quantity, regional distribution, and combat capability, strengthening the protection of naval groups, anti-submarine warfare, area air defense, and aircraft carrier escort in an increasingly sensitive maritime area.

In practical terms, China gains a ship that can protect, attack, deter, and accompany its main power projection units, all within the same operational architecture.

Where These Ships Have Been Positioned and Why It Matters So Much

The two new destroyers have been assigned to the Eastern Theater Command Navy, which is responsible for operations in the East China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. This allocation is not merely an administrative detail.

It places the new units in one of the most sensitive regions of China’s strategic surroundings, where naval presence, response capability, and demonstration of force carry permanent weight. By directing these ships to the Eastern Theater, China reinforces a maritime space where every military move carries political, operational, and symbolic value.

With this distribution, China’s three main naval commands—North, South, and East—now operate Type 055 destroyers. The result is broader coverage and a greater ability to spread high-value assets across different maritime theaters without relying on excessive concentration in just one area.

This enhances the Chinese navy’s flexibility to respond to distinct scenarios while simultaneously reducing the need for lengthy relocations to reestablish presence in critical areas. When the same advanced class is present in the main commands, China improves its operational reach and gains the capacity to sustain more than one operational front.

The Expansion of This Class Reveals the Direction of Chinese Strategy

The rapid advancement of the Type 055 class reflects the broader modernization effort of the People’s Liberation Army Navy. The growth of the fleet does not seem focused solely on coastal presence or limited regional patrols.
