Greek Taxi Driver Sets Record By Driving Over 4.6 Million Kilometers In The Same Mercedes-Benz 240D, Pushing Limits And Showing The Vehicle’s Durability.

In the mid-1970s, the European automotive market was marked by high confidence in diesel engines and a quest for efficiency and durability, especially for taxis and commercial fleets. In this scenario, models like the Mercedes-Benz 240D stood out for their robustness and longevity, becoming a popular choice among professional drivers, such as taxi drivers.

Imagine driving the same car for 4.6 million kilometers — the equivalent of 115 laps around the world. This incredible feat, accomplished by Greek taxi driver Gregorios Sachinidis with his 1976 Mercedes-Benz 240D, is a symbol of resilience and dedication.

Sachinidis traversed cities, roads, and adverse weather conditions, recording every maintenance, parts replacement, and mechanical adjustment along his journey.

The Mercedes-Benz 240D

The Mercedes-Benz 240D from the W115 series was known for its robustness, standing out with the characteristics below:

  • Efficient Diesel Engine, ideal for long distances and continuous service;
  • Simple Electronics, reducing failures and facilitating maintenance;
  • Resilient Steel Body, ready to withstand intense use;
  • Fuel Economy, essential for taxi services.

The resilience of the 240D exceeded expectations: while common cars require major repairs after 300,000 km, Sachinidis’ vehicle surpassed 4.6 million kilometers, showcasing the superiority of German engineering.

23 Years Of Uninterrupted Work

Between 1976 and 1999, Sachinidis covered over 600 km daily, transporting passengers across Greek cities and highways. Despite financial difficulties, he never compromised on meticulous maintenance, preserving the efficiency of the vehicle.

In doing so, he turned his car into a symbol of trust and longevity, proving that dedication and care are fundamental for a long lifespan.

Secrets Of Longevity

The impressive durability of the Mercedes-Benz 240D was the result of a rigorous maintenance routine:

  • Oil Changes Every 10,000 Km, protecting the engine’s internal components;
  • Constant Replacement of Air and Fuel Filters, preventing damage to the system;
  • Transmission and Clutch Checks, ensuring smooth performance;
  • Cooling System Inspections, avoiding overheating;
  • Engine Reconditioning, extending lifespan with specific repairs.

Moreover, the mechanical simplicity of the W115 model, with fewer electronic components, reduced costs and made repairs more practical.

The Recognition By Mercedes-Benz

In 1999, Mercedes-Benz celebrated Gregorios Sachinidis’ achievement by displaying the legendary taxi in their museum as a symbol of the durability of their engineering.

As a token of gratitude, the manufacturer gifted the taxi driver a brand new Mercedes E-Class, keeping his passion for the brand alive.

Não tem como um táxi rodar 600km por dia em nenhum lugar do mundo.
