Officially launched in 1997, the O&K RH400 quickly claimed the title of the world’s largest hydraulic excavator. Shortly after, in 1997/1998, O&K’s mining division was acquired by Terex Corporation, and the machine became known as the Terex RH400.

The numbers of the RH400 justify its fame as a Giant Excavator. Its operational weight is approximately 980 metric tons. The driving force comes from two powerful engines, such as the Cummins QSK 60-C, totaling around 4,400 to 4,500 horsepower (hp).
Its working capacity is monumental. The standard front bucket holds between 43.5 and 50 cubic meters, allowing it to move approximately 100 tons of material in a single pass. In terms of productivity, the RH400 set a world record at the time of its launch, with reports of moving approximately 9,900 tons of material per hour.

The main highlight is the patented front shovel articulation system known as TriPower. This system provided significant advantages, such as greater digging and lifting forces, maintaining a constant bucket angle during horizontal movement, and greater energy efficiency.
In addition to TriPower, the Giant Excavator had a high-capacity advanced hydraulic system capable of providing the power and control necessary for heavy loads. Other innovations included an efficient independent oil cooling system and a sophisticated electronic control system (Board Control System – BCS, or Pump Managing System – PMS) for monitoring and diagnostics.

It played a key role in the extraction of oil sands in Canada, in projects like Syncrude, where its robustness and capacity were essential. This Giant Excavator also operated in large coal mines in Europe, India, and Australia.
Its strength was equally applied in iron ore mining, such as the Sino Iron project in Western Australia, and in platinum mines, such as the Mogalakwena mine in South Africa. In all these applications, the RH400 demonstrated its ability to optimize productivity and face severe operating conditions.
