With Capacity to Process 225 Thousand Barrels of Oil and 12 Million Cubic Meters of Gas Per Day, Brazil’s Largest Oil Platform Starts Operations in the Búzios Field and Could Take National Production to Unprecedented Levels!
Brazil has just put into operation the largest offshore oil platform in the country: the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré. Located in the Búzios Field, in the Santos Basin, the gigantic floating production storage and offloading unit has the capacity to process up to 225 thousand barrels of oil and 12 million cubic meters of natural gas per day. To give you an idea, this daily production is equivalent to almost 10% of the country’s total oil demand.
The platform will operate 15 wells, with seven oil producers, six water and gas injectors, one convertible, and one gas injector. All this connected by a sophisticated underwater infrastructure, which allows for the extraction and transportation of oil at thousands of meters deep.
The Potential of the Búzios Field in the Pre-Salt

The Brazilian pre-salt is one of the largest oil reserves in the world, hidden under layers of rock at depths between 5,000 and 7,000 meters. Within this region, the Búzios Field stands out as one of the most promising areas. According to Petrobras, the site may become the company’s largest production field, with the potential to exceed 1.5 million barrels per day in the coming years.

The Almirante Tamandaré is a key piece in reaching this milestone. By the second half of 2025, the expectation is that the Búzios Field will reach production of 1 million barrels daily, consolidating the importance of the new platform in the national energy scenario.
Technology and Sustainability in Oil Exploration
In addition to its high production capacity, Brazil’s largest oil platform brings technological innovations that reduce its environmental impact. The unit features decarbonization systems to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and heat recovery technologies that optimize energy consumption on board.
This represents a significant advancement in the oil and gas sector, which seeks to balance production growth with more sustainable practices. According to Petrobras, these measures ensure greater efficiency and reduce the need for additional energy, contributing to a cleaner extraction process.
Impact of the New Platform on National Production
The commencement of operations for the Almirante Tamandaré is not only a technological milestone but also a major step forward for strengthening oil production in Brazil. The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, highlighted that the unit represents a strategic advancement, as it produces more while using fewer resources and generating less environmental impact.
The new platform was chartered from SBM Offshore, a company that provided the necessary technology for its construction. The unit exceeds the average capacity of most platforms in the world, which typically hovers around 150 thousand barrels of oil daily and compression of 10 million cubic meters of gas.
Discovery of New Reserves in the Santos Basin
The good news doesn’t stop there. A day before the start of operations for the Almirante Tamandaré, Petrobras identified new oil reserves in the western region of the Búzios Field, in a well drilled at 1,940 meters deep.
This discovery further strengthens Brazil’s position in the global oil market and may result in future production increases, consolidating the country among the leading oil exporters in the world.
