Minimum Wage Surges to R$ 1,640: New Law With Increase Announced for Millions of CLT Workers
The announcement of the new minimum wage of R$ 1,640 caught everyone by surprise, even the Planning Minister, Simone Tebet. The new law, which is already affecting the finances of millions of CLT workers, goes beyond initial expectations and raises heated discussions about the economic impacts of this adjustment.
Since January 2024, the national minimum wage was R$ 1,412, set by the federal government. However, in an unexpected move, the state of São Paulo decided to take a step forward. With the new law signed by Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, the state minimum wage has been adjusted to R$ 1,640, a 5.8% increase from the previous amount of R$ 1,550. This increase is far above the accumulated inflation of 3.93%, demonstrating a significant effort to improve the living conditions of São Paulo’s workers.
New Law in São Paulo
This new amount not only surpasses the national minimum wage by 16.1%, but also reflects the concern of the São Paulo government to ensure that wages keep up with the local cost of living. Since the establishment of the state minimum wage in 2007, São Paulo has maintained a tradition of adjustments aimed at providing more dignity and purchasing power to workers. The accumulated increase since 2022 has already reached 27.7%, with a continuous growth that is welcome, especially in times of economic challenges.

New Law Boosted the State Minimum Wage
The new law that boosted the state minimum wage in São Paulo is seen as a model to be followed, showing that it is possible to promote real and significant increases. For example, in 2023, the adjustments in the state were 20.7% and 18.7% for the two existing wage brackets, until they were unified to simplify the wage structure. This benefits about 60 million people who directly depend on this wage.
The process for the approval of the new law was swift. The adjustment proposal arrived at the São Paulo State Legislative Assembly (Alesp) at the end of April 2024 and was approved and signed by the governor in May. This agility reflects the support of state deputies for the measure and the importance that the São Paulo government places on the wage issue, ensuring that workers can benefit from the new amounts as quickly as possible.
Expectation Centers on the Next National Adjustment
Now, with the new law in effect, the expectation centers on the next national adjustment. For 2025, the federal government has already proposed a minimum wage of R$ 1,502, which would represent a 6.37% increase from the current amount of R$ 1,412. The proposal was included in the 2025 Budgetary Guidelines Law Project (PLDO), submitted to Congress in April of this year.
This scenario of adjustments and new minimum wage amounts shows how the new law can shape the future of Brazilian workers, creating an environment where compensation increasingly seeks to keep up with the country’s economic reality and ensure better conditions for millions of people. The impact of this new law is already felt in discussions about the future of the national economy and promises to influence political decisions in the coming years.
What do you think of this new law that raised the minimum wage to R$ 1,640 in São Paulo? How do you think this increase will impact the lives of workers and the economy in general?
