The Dual Tunnel Works at Vieira Hill, Strategic Part of the Duplication of BR-280, Have Reached About 75% Execution and Continue with Important Structural Interventions. The Expected Delivery of the Section Is for the End of 2027, Depending on the Continuity of Federal Funding.
The duplication of BR-280, one of the most anticipated infrastructure projects in northern Santa Catarina, continues at a rapid pace, especially in the section that includes the dual tunnel under construction between Jaraguá do Sul and Schroeder.
This phase is part of batch 2.2 of the federal highway duplication, covering a new layout of 24 km known as the BR-280 bypass.
With investments exceeding R$ 993 million, this batch is one of the most advanced in the duplication and is close to achieving 75% execution, according to the National Department of Transport Infrastructure of Santa Catarina (DNIT/SC).

Structural Interventions Advance on the External Part of the Dual Tunnel
The dual tunnel, which will have an extension of 1,060 meters on the left side and 1,005 meters on the right, is receiving important reinforcements on the external part of the west portal.
The teams are working on the lateral slope containment works, using anchors — anchoring devices of different sizes — for stabilization of the mass.
In addition, there is the application of shotcrete with a thickness of 12 cm and the installation of a covering with a metal mesh, measures that ensure the integrity of the structure in the face of intense rains and soil movements.
Deep horizontal drains are also being implemented to prevent infiltrations and reinforce the durability of the work.
Construction Site Inside the Tunnel Accelerates Viaduct Construction
Another highlight in the works is the production of the beams for the access viaducts to the tunnel.
To optimize time and logistics, the tunnel is being used as a construction site, where the beams are molded and then transported to the assembly locations.
This strategy has been essential for the progress of the duplication of BR-280, which still has two other batches along the 75 km between São Francisco do Sul and Jaraguá do Sul.
Release Will Only Occur with Complete Completion of the Batch
Despite the advances, traffic through the dual tunnel will only be allowed after the complete finalization of batch 2.2, expected in December 2027.
This estimate, however, is contingent on maintaining the financial allocations from the federal government.
According to DNIT, the tunnel is a key piece for the road bypass and represents a milestone in the modernization of BR-280, ensuring more safety and fluidity for the heavy traffic in the region.
Importance of the Duplication of BR-280 for Regional Development
The duplication of BR-280 is considered strategic not only for the flow of industrial production in Santa Catarina but also for improving urban mobility and reducing accidents on one of the busiest highways in the state.
The inclusion of the dual tunnel in this context reinforces the complexity and importance of the project for regional development.
With the continuity of the works and adherence to deadlines, the expectation is that the new section will boost the local economy and bring more quality of life to drivers and residents of the involved cities.
