Volvo Electric Minivan Has Photos Released by Chinese Ministry. Electric Vehicle Features Unique Design and Promises to Revolutionize the Sustainable Minivan Segment.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China (MIIT) has released some images of Volvo’s EM90 electric minivan online, nearly a month before the official launch. The procedure may seem strange; however, it is standard for the homologation of any vehicle sold in the country.

Volvo Minivan Features 272 Horsepower

The photos are much more revealing than the teaser released earlier. The company’s next launch for the Asian market is based on the Zeekr 009 from Geely, the Chinese automaker that bought Volvo in 2010. The same minimalist and angular design is present in the electric minivan.

The hammer-shaped headlights, for example, are similar to those on the EX30 and EX90, Volvo’s top electric models. A grille-shaped panel with the Volvo emblem and custom wheels complete the vehicle’s design. The only motor installed on the rear axle of the Volvo minivan is capable of delivering up to 272 horsepower.

According to information released by the MIIT of China, the Volvo minivan measures 5.2 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and 1.85 meters in height, weighing approximately 2,763 kg. There is still no data on its battery; however, if it is similar to the Zeekr 009, it is estimated to be equipped with a unit with a capacity of 140 kWh.

Enough to travel up to 822 km per charge in the Chinese CLTC testing cycle. A version with a smaller battery (116 kWh) is also expected to be sold, with a range of 700 km.

So far, there are also no details about the interior of the EM90 electric minivan or anticipated pricing. The Volvo minivan officially debuts on November 12, with deliveries scheduled for the first quarter of 2024 in China.

In 2021, Geely launched Zeekr, a luxury electric car brand. Shortly after, the brand already released the electric sedan Zeekr 001. In November of last year, the brand launched the new Zekkr 009, a luxury electric van.

The model is equipped with two electric motors that together generate 544 horsepower and 686 Nm of torque, which can be paired with a 116 kWh battery, providing a range of 702 km in the CLTC cycle or a 140 kWh battery from CATL, as mentioned earlier.

The model also features rapid charging capability from 10 to 80% in 28 minutes. The minivan can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. Equipped with independent air suspension and electromagnetic dampers, it includes a level 2+ autonomous driving safety system, managed by 2 chips of 7 Nm from Mobile Eye.

Volvo and Renault Open Company for Development of Electric Vans

In an important step toward electrification, the Volvo Group, Renault, and CMA CGM announced a partnership for the development of a new generation of electric vans.

This venture aims to meet the growing demand for efficient and decarbonized logistics, anticipating future regulations on CO2 emissions in goods transportation.

According to data from Renault, the three companies plan to invest 300 million euros each over the next three years to drive this innovation. The establishment of the new company is expected in early 2024, subject to the completion of all regulatory approval processes. The future company will operate under its own corporate identity and will be based in France.
