Armox® Steel from SSAB Halves the Weight of a Bulletproof Door Manufactured by Tecno Safety

Armox® Steel from SSAB Halves the Weight of a Bulletproof Door Manufactured by Tecno Safety

Due to the Increase in Cases of Violence Against Property, the Need for Customized Security Doors for Each Segment is Growing

Tecno Safety, a company recently launched by the Tecno Group – 15 years in the market, a leader in the industrial and commercial door segment – is based in the security and protection segment, involving a wide range in the private market (retail), corporate (large companies), and planning to enter the government sector, with applications of SSAB’s steels.

The escalation of violence in major urban centers in recent decades has raised concerns among governments, civil organizations, and the population itself. The task for a scenario of peace is urgent, but some solutions can serve as a palliative to restore the sense of security. Although automotive armoring is booming, with the number of armored vehicles hitting a record high, rising from 20,024 to 25,916 units between 2021 and 2022, according to Abrablin (Brazilian Association of Armoring), the architectural armoring market is present, being competitive, with several industries developing technologies and services that also benefit civil society.

Tecno Safety is one of them. With engineer Felipe Masetti as technical director, the bulletproof doors manufactured by the company using SSAB’s steels – a Swedish multinational and world leader in the production of high-strength steels – meet an audience that purchases armored products out of necessity. They are ballistic plates, lightweight, and anti-burglary, meaning they have the necessary rigidity against forced intrusion.

The Weight of National Steel

One of the main problems Felipe Masetti faced in his area was the weight of bulletproof doors. With ballistic level 3 per NBR 15000, protection against rifles, it is a door that the market still manufactures with national steel and weighs 250 kilograms (a traditional sheet of 2.10m by 80cm width). “This conventional door, made with national steel, means not only an inconvenience in handling – it requires effort to move. But beyond that, it generates many incidents, due to handling 250 kilograms moving, and when positioned in the frame, it becomes a guillotine. If it catches a finger, the finger won’t just turn purple. Either the finger breaks or even gets severed. It’s a danger.”

The Solution Found

The first thought to solve the weight issue of the door was to use aramid in its manufacture, a lighter product. However, the ballistic aspect is a complement to the purchase differential of the door: the main point is to be anti-burglary. “If you acquire a bulletproof door, the protection will not only be against shots but also that it has rigidity so that no one can enter. And in that, aramid is zero,” says Felipe Masetti. The solution found came from research discovering SSAB’s high-strength steels. “I was surprised that the company was present in Brazil. From the moment Armox® steel started to be used, we managed to drastically reduce the weight of a bulletproof door: it went from weighing 120 to 130 kilograms, half the original weight. It is equivalent to the weight of a solid wood door in a high-standard house. Everyone is already used to it,” adds Masetti.

High Performance of Armox® Sheet

But the main motivation for choosing Armox® steel in the construction of the doors was not just weight reduction but the overall performance. “I was part of the review of the Brazilian standard, NBR 15000, in 2020, and one of the items I managed to approve was to add a PE, a Special Protection for buildings of armor level 2, with the use of SSAB steel. With burst shots, the steel remains intact. So, it’s not just about weight, but the overall performance of this material,” evaluates Masetti.

Technical Argument for Sales Success

“I hardly lose a sale when I have a technical argument. The door made with Armox® steel has a performance far superior to what the market practices. The final product is impressive. Clients say, “Felipe, what door is that?”, because it looks like wood, has flatness, finish, and doesn’t have those surface defects on the steel,” says Masetti. “This quality also reflects on the conditions in which I deliver my product: SSAB’s sheet gives a perception of quality.”

Strengths of Armox® Steel Applied in Doors

From the perspective of raw material, Felipe comments on unexpected benefits, such as the quality of SSAB’s steel. “Armox® sheet does not have the surface tension of a national sheet. We strictly follow the recommendations for cutting, welding, handling, and drilling, and what is a burden for competitors, perhaps due to not having machinery to process SSAB’s steel, is a quality for us,” emphasizes the engineer. “Working with the right tools and the appropriate technologies, it is a great ally because it is a flat product. It is a material that requires treatment with the best that technology has to offer.”

Benefits of Working with SSAB Material and the Differential of Its Product Compared to the Competition

According to Felipe, Armox® is a steel different from conventional ones, as its resistance to burglary is much greater than a door made with another material. SSAB’s sheet will resist perforation. “That is great when we talk about resistance.” Additionally, other benefits are the superior finish, due to the sheet being flatter and having lower residual tension, which consequently increases manufacturing productivity, as well as the lightness of the steel.

Development of More Products with Other SSAB Steels

Felipe mentions that Tecno Safety’s line of doors is quite extensive, utilizing the range of materials from SSAB, such as Ramor® steels and complementary ones, like Strenx®, SR line, in addition to ballistic lines. There is also a list of products under development to use SSAB steels in the door structure. “When you stop using conventional steels for the door structure, there is a significant evolution in performance. In cases of burglary, the elastic memory of SSAB steel provides an excellent condition regarding deformation and return to the initial position, unlike conventional steel, which when deformed, loses its entire structure.”

Target Audience for the Application of Armox® Steel at Tecno Safety

As technical director of Tecno Safety, Felipe’s work is focused on the architectural armoring segment, creating innovative products that are increasingly growing in this segment. “Generally, our target audience suffers from planned criminality. When we use high hard steel, with resistance to perforation, we also achieve effective results against these programmed attacks,” says the technical director of Tecno Safety. “They won’t be able to drill the lock with a drill, for example, because they will face SSAB steel in front of them.”

Tecno Safety’s Line of Doors

Tecno Safety’s line of doors includes the conventional door – level 3, anti-burglary, made with Strenx® structural steel; the 3 A bulletproof door for handguns, made with Strenx® and 2.5mm Ramor® material; and the bulletproof door for heavy weapons, against rifles, made with 5mm SSAB steel. This door, compared to conventional steel, would be 12mm, resulting in a reduction and more than half the weight. A new product arriving on the market is the door shield, made with SSAB steel, which goes on top of the already existing door as an overlay, providing mechanical structure against burglary, as well as ballistic resistance, without the headaches of a large construction project, with ready-to-deliver service, being a quick process.

Shield Door: An Innovation

“If it weren’t for SSAB steel, I wouldn’t be able to make this shield due to its lightness and reduced weight,” evaluates Masetti. This innovation was based on market research and is patented. The door has the strength to hold the shield and has a reinforcing mechanism to support the weight. It is an innovative product that solves security problems,” he adds. “The delivery of a bulletproof door can take up to 30 days, as it is necessary to make the frame marks, cut, purchase the sheet, in addition to the construction work. However, the shield doesn’t require modifying the door, and it is possible to make it in the morning with delivery for the same afternoon,” guarantees Felipe.

Proof of Functionality

Today, most of the competition’s doors are made with common steel and because of that, they do not have any certificate of ballistic effectiveness for that door’s use. “All SSAB sheets have ballistic certification, meaning the material has been tested, approved, and certified by the Brazilian army for use in that ballistic application. It is a material produced for security. Additionally, it is the only company that operates 100% legally in relation to products controlled by the Brazilian army in the area of steel sheets,” comments Felipe.

Innovation in the Market

The bulletproof doors produced by Tecno Safety with Armox® steel from SSAB open up a range of innovations, bringing automation with facial technology (biometrics), adding even more value to the final product, with security and resistance. Furthermore, with a thinner door, there is more space to place things inside, such as electromechanical locks, which are connected to modern opening systems, in addition to being able to offer other features with reliability, such as sealing, acoustics, and aesthetics.

Examples with SSAB Steel

Felipe also comments on the sheets commonly referred to as “for bullets” at shooting ranges, capable of stopping projectiles. No matter how thick they were, they did not have the characteristics of SSAB steel, which, in addition to high resistance to Brinell hardness perforation, also has high abrasion resistance. “When we talk about shots, we are talking about abrasion, and in these steels, even thick ones, where the ammunition strikes, it starts to create dents, forming a shell on this sheet, and sometimes the projectile from a handgun (pistol), which is the ammunition used by police forces in close-range confrontations, due to its agility and weight, hits these shells and often returns to the shooter, causing ricochet and consequently damage when the bullet bounces back. That’s why they started using SSAB steel, which will last for many years without the need for maintenance or replacement.”

Demand for Security Gaining Great Attention

Graduated in civil engineering in 1987, Felipe Masetti, the technical director of Tecno Safety, was a partner in a company in the construction and technological innovation sector, providing product development services for large companies and consultants. Starting in 2003, the demand for protection (in the security area) grew due to the increase in violence and the sense of insecurity. With the segment growing and after studies and research, Felipe created the company Safety Wall in 2008, coinciding with the beginning of the partnership with SSAB. “I have a long history with SSAB, in the protection market. And right from the start, knowing about the presence of the steelmaking company in Brazil coincides with these almost 20 years that I have been in the field and I saw a huge possibility for the use of its products.”

Long Partnership in a Growing Market

“From then on, it was a long partnership, with the most varied experiences, from corporate segments, government, to the “Very VIPS” – the rich families,” comments Felipe. With his extensive experience, he was a manufacturer of security structures for consulates and embassies in national territory and has a letter of recommendation from Washington, as he was responsible for the armoring of Visa Issuance Centers at the American consulate, not only in São Paulo but also in Rio de Janeiro and other states. “It’s a much larger segment and is much more present than we imagine,” he assesses. The applications draw attention within SSAB itself, such as the armoring of consulates and a fortification network for farms, made by a professional who has 20 years of experience in this market.

Felipe Masetti emphasizes that he has done and continues to do many protection projects and actions, since “unfortunately, it is the market of fear.” “Everyone is scared, it’s getting worse. Insecurity is a reality, it is out of control. It is a segment that is growing tremendously each year and has a constantly increasing demand, a capillarity that we cannot even imagine. When we talk about the corporate market, the technical requirement is much greater, and there’s no denying it: it’s all SSAB.”

Support from SSAB and Long Partnership

“The technical support from SSAB is nonexistent because the product has no recalls,” jokes the engineer. “I have clients who made doors 12, 13 years ago and I have never had a complaint. This closeness of technological development, the way SSAB treats its customer, a presence inside the company, it is not a company that is just there to sell a supply. They are supporting product development, being part of it, step by step. It is a very intense partnership and that is very common in technical products. It is the vision of the importance of innovation,” declares Felipe Masetti.

Growth Goal of Tecno Safety

“We want to be a reference with an innovative, quality product, of high performance in the security segment.” Felipe Masetti believes greatly in the private market, the major driver of sales. “It’s not just a theft, it’s a piece of a person’s tranquility. It’s a market opportunity, but it’s a sad reality,” he concludes.
