The Mobile Modular Energy Service Provider Has Decided to Expand Its Operations and Become an Investor in the Biogas Segment for Energy Generation

Aggreko, a company specializing in providing energy, cooling, and refrigeration solutions, is launching a call for projects capable of transforming biomass from different origins into biogas for energy generation. According to Aggreko’s sales director in Brazil, Hugo Dominguez, the initiative fits into a plan to diversify the business model: the company already offers generation solutions for the biogas market and now also wants to sell the energy. New Biogas Projects to Generate Energy

For this new venture, R$ 240 million has been allocated – the execution of this entire amount will depend on the outcome of the call for projects. The Aggreko executive says that they currently have partners who offset energy for the client. “We want to take a step further, further flexibly our operations and directly enter the commercialization [of energy] in the free market or carry out the compensation for the client ourselves,” says Hugo.

Aggreko has 25 megawatts (MW) in biogas plants in the “distributed generation” modality, meaning projects of up to 5 MW built at or near the energy consumption site. In these cases, the company provided “turnkey” solutions, encompassing everything from modeling to equipment operation and maintenance.

For upcoming projects, the idea is to continue working with distributed generation ventures, a model deemed compatible with the company’s objective to encourage decentralization and decarbonization of energy generation.

Investments to Be Made by the Company

If realized, the plan to invest R$ 240 million in biogas projects for energy generation in the country is expected to result in the generation of 163 thousand megawatt-hours (MWh) per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of 81 thousand households. The forecast is to have production between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. Aggreko’s initiative comes at a time of expansion in the national biogas market. Last year, the country recorded a 22% increase in the number of plants, reaching 675 units, according to CIBiogás. Moreover, the volume of biogas produced for energy purposes grew by 23%.

Despite the growth potential, particularly with agribusiness waste, the participation of biogas in the Brazilian energy matrix is still relatively low. Data from the association Abiogás shows that total national production currently reaches 1.5 billion cubic meters per year, representing 0.9% participation in the matrix.

Jalles Machado signed a contract with Albioma regarding the expansion project to increase the energy efficiency of the biomass energy generation unit adjacent to the Otávio Lage Plant and to develop a biogas production project from vinasse, a residue from ethanol distillation. The sugar-energy company plans to invest R$ 94 million.

The partnership between Jalles Machado, a reference company in the sugar-energy sector, and Albioma, an independent energy producer, includes part of the biogas production project at the Otávio Lage Plant in Goiás, with contributions from Biomass, Vinasse, and other assets subject to a purchase option in 2033 or at the end of the relationship between the two companies.

The other part of the biogas production project from vinasse, a residue from ethanol distillation, aims to fulfill the obligations assumed by Albioma in the energy purchase contract, with a duration of 20 years starting in 2025, for the volume of 64 GWh and a guaranteed price of R$ 202.35/MWh, adjusted for inflation, arising from Auction ANEEL 007/2021 (A4) held on July 8, 2021.
