Upon arriving in Belém, the Minister of Mines and Energy made a strong defense for the continuation of studies on oil exploration in the region.
He argues that Brazil has the right to explore its energy potential and that careful analysis is essential for informed decision-making.
“What is, in my opinion, unacceptable, is that we do not have the right to know our potential,” he said.
The executive also discussed the current fuel market situation, emphasizing that the world is still moving toward freeing itself from oil as the main raw material.
“The world unfortunately has not yet reached the point of being able to renounce the current energy matrix, which has fossil fuel as predominant,” he added.
Minister Silveira acknowledges the global challenges related to the current energy matrix. According to him, the transition to cleaner sources requires time and investment, and oil exploration in the Amazon is seen as part of the country’s energy equation.
Lula Administration Remains Controversial on the Topic of Amazon Mouth Exploration
Within the discussions surrounding oil exploration in the Amazon, a new relevant element arises in the market: pressure from the Colombian government, led by President Gustavo Petro.
This has made public its desire to propose a pact to Amazonian countries, seeking to curb the increase in oil exploration in the region.
In the context of the Amazon Dialogues, Colombian Minister of Environment, Susana Muhamad, highlights an apparent contradiction in the proposed approach.
She considers that the intention to restrict oil exploration appears inconsistent amid the urgent climate crisis the world is facing.
Internally, former Minister of Environment of Brazil, Marina Silva, joins the debate with her analysis, remaining divided from other members of the Lula Administration.
Although she does not directly mention the issue of oil exploration in the Amazon, Marina emphasizes that the moment requires coherent and decisive actions in the market. She points out the global need to drastically reduce emissions from fossil fuels.
“Even if we manage to reduce deforestation by 100%, if the world does not stop fossil fuel emissions, we will harm the Amazon just the same,” she stated.
In a context marked by external pressures and divergent internal voices, the debate on oil exploration in the Amazon continues to evolve.
Now, it is up to the Minister of Mines and Energy, along with other ministries, to continue the discussion on the Amazon Mouth project.
