Russia Is Going Beyond the War Against Ukraine and Trying to Sabotage Oil Bases Worldwide

And Russia strikes again. This time, a notorious group of hackers that has previously breached various websites and compromised Ukraine’s confidentiality attempted to attack oil bases in some NATO countries. However, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has a reinforced security system and was able to prevent even greater damage.

This fact draws significant attention as it goes beyond the borders of Ukraine and presents an offensive towards countries that could assist it in the war. Thus, the attack raises a red flag for the countries involved in the treaty, aiming to avoid attacks and information leaks. Want to know more about this invasion? Continue reading.

The Attempted Attack on an Oil Base Happened in August but Was Only Disclosed in December 2022

The Group from Russia that tried to invade the oil base of NATO countries has already been identified under various names around the world. In this sense, the group has been identified by the following codenames:

  • Trident Ursa;
  • Gamaredon;
  • UAC-0010;
  • Primitive Bear;
  • Shuckworm.

These designations emerged from the Security Service of Ukraine. Furthermore, the attack occurred in August 2022. However, the disclosure that some bases had suffered the attack was made only in December when the threats were neutralized.

Hackers Wanted to Steal Information About the Energy Sector to Harm Allies.

The group that attempted the attack on NATO, at the oil base, has been involved in several unsuccessful attempts in 2022. After all, the security service identified over 500 domains and around 200 samples left accessible to the systems. Traces of spear phishing and malware campaigns were left behind, attempting to leak information.

Moreover, the group operates in different languages like Ukrainian and English. Thus, they can breach the systems of target countries with impressive ease. Experts point out that Trident Ursa aims to enhance its intelligence to become even more unbeatable and succeed in future attacks.

Report Issued on Attacks on Oil Bases Was Not Clear About Which Countries Were Affected.

The report containing information on the attacks received was not clear regarding which countries were involved in the situation. However, what is known is that Russia has a strong interest in affecting those with a robust energy sector that are aligned with Ukraine.

Experts warn of the potential threat this may pose globally in the coming months. After all, any country that declares support for Ukraine could become a major target for the Russians. Therefore, we must not be naïve enough to think that Russia will not attempt to attack systems or oil bases in other countries, such as Brazil.

Western Countries Opposed to Russia Are Applying Economic Pressure for the War to End

On one side, Russia tries to leak data from countries with a robust energy sector, and on the other, Western countries and NATO are applying economic and tactical pressures. Thus, what is sought is an end to this war that has lasted a year. However, it seems that the peace agreement will take time to materialize, as there is still no established consensus.

Nevertheless, authorities in Western countries assure that increased pressure and growing isolation of Russia may encourage the end of the war.
