Anatel Carries Out Mega Operation and Seizes Over 22 Thousand Illegal Products on Amazon and Mercado Livre. Seizure Losses Reach R$ 3 Million Distributed Among Companies.
The presence of Anatel is increasingly felt in the daily lives of Brazilian consumers, especially when it comes to purchasing technological devices. Even on official channels and renowned platforms like Amazon and Mercado Livre, the agency’s actions can directly impact the final consumer. Now, thousands of illegal products on Amazon and Mercado Livre have been seized.
Over 22 Thousand Illegal Products on Amazon and Mercado Livre
Anatel carried out an operation on the last Black Friday, where it ‘struck down’ and seized purchases containing one of the most loved products and number one among Brazilians who don’t go without streaming.
The event occurred between November 26 and 29, when Anatel, in partnership with the Federal Revenue, seized about 22 thousand illegal products on Amazon and Mercado Livre, affecting the warehouses of Amazon and Mercado Livre, located in Betim (MG) and Cajamar (SP).

Among the items seized by Anatel are cell phones, chargers, drones, headphones, microphones, batteries, laptops, and smartwatches that together total a value of R$ 3 million. About 12 thousand items were collected only from Amazon’s warehouses, totaling a value of R$ 1.6 million.
According to council member Alexandre Freire, the action aimed to protect consumers against products that do not meet safety and quality standards and to ensure the integrity of telecommunications networks.
Despite the seizure of illegal products on Amazon and Mercado Livre, both companies have strict policies against the sale of illegal products. The platforms have systems to verify the provenance of items sold by third parties and claim to cooperate with authorities to prevent the sale of illegal products.
Companies Have Not Commented on Anatel’s Action
However, companies are not exempt from such actions, especially during periods of high activity, such as Black Friday, when the number of listings and active sellers grows exponentially.
Amazon, for instance, was fined R$ 47 thousand for allowing the advertisement of non-homologated devices, such as security cameras and TV Boxes, one of the most sought-after products for those who don’t go without a series or streaming channels.
However, the company appealed the decision and emphasized its commitment to meeting Brazilian regulatory requirements. It is worth mentioning that, until now, none of the companies have commented on the incident. However, the space remains open if they wish to express their versions of the facts. Every telecommunications product sold in Brazil must be certified by Anatel.
Understand the Impacts of Anatel’s Seizure
Anatel seizes illegal products on Amazon and Mercado Livre, and certification ensures products that meet mandatory standards for devices that emit radio frequency, technical assistance in case of defects, and certified products do not interfere with the functioning of telecommunications networks.
All these actions by Anatel draw attention to the demand for greater oversight and transparency in e-commerce. At the same time, they reinforce the importance for consumers to be aware of the provenance of products acquired, even on recognized platforms.
Just for the sake of knowledge, in 2023, overall sales increased by 16.1% during Black Friday according to data from Cielo.
According to Freire, Anatel’s role is to ensure consumer protection regarding access to these products that are subjected to digital sales markets without proper certification. This is an essential role to protect consumers from access to products that do not meet safety and quality standards, in addition to ensuring the integrity of telecommunications networks.

Imposto e roubo!
